this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Why was Payton willing to gamble on an on-side kick and motion out of a FG attempt but wouldn't throw for a 1st down on 3rd down in the Saints final possession?...

I want an explanation!
Why was Payton willing to gamble on an on-side kick and motion out of a FG attempt but wouldn't throw for a 1st down on 3rd down in the Saints final possession?

Re: I want an explanation!
He made some abysmal decisions today but overall had the feel of a guy who is really scared to lose. Has he lost his edge? The Saints didn't become what they are by playing it safe.

Re: I want an explanation!
Whodat!656... this also happened in the New England game. I felt we needed to throw the football early in that drive, or at least on 2nd down to keep the clock moving.
Then again, these past two weeks especially our offensive line gives up way too much pressure on Brees. Maybe Payton felt it was best to just run the football and take his chances that way. |

Re: I want an explanation!
I had no problem with runs on 1st and 2nd down but in the Live Chat I wanted them to have the option to throw on 3rd. I wanted to see them roll out Brees and if he has a guy open throw it, if not eat it and let some clock run off. Payton coached that game at the end not to lose and got burned for it. It was very odd considering he's usually a very aggressive coach.

Re: I want an explanation!
Payton has notoriously played the run game poorely his entire careeer here. He tries to fit a round peg in a square hole.
that being said we were having a little success running today, just not on that last job. |

Re: I want an explanation!
Running the ball 3 straight times kept the clock running, but I agree a QB roll out would have a better call on 3rd down

Re: I want an explanation!
Carolina was selling out for the run on that series. On 3rd down a nice play action, bootleg would of been the perfect call. You hope someone slips open and you pick up an easy first. If no one gets open, eat it and run the clock down. Don't know why we ran it on 3rd right up the gut into their entire defense.

Re: I want an explanation!
hindsight is always 20/20... If they would have ran it 3 times and got the first, we'd all be saying how Payton is a genius for not giving up on the run...
