Re: Jimmy Graham Contract
I believe the best solution to Graham's contract is to trade him to get into the top eight of the draft - maybe the Raiders?!?
Graham and our first round pick for a top eight pick, plus a second and third round pick... We could select a cornerstone Left Tackle and get two quality players in the second and third rounds to upgrade holes in the WR depth and in the back half of the defense... The pink Saints jerseys might take a hit, but Saints fans that really know football know we've got to take back the line of scrimmage if we're gonna have another Lombardi Gras... Keeping Graham we may put up some amazing stats, but we'll have a second round ceiling that we won't be able to overcome... Graham is our priority in free agency, but that doesn't mean he's on the roster long term... |

I'm having fits with this "sign and trade"..... Why do you want to intentionally inflict a minimum 7-12 million dollars worth of dead money on your self? It's like...... Buying a brand new Porche Panamerra Turbo Executive S, then driving it to a Honda lot and trading it in on 3 Hondas. Jesus, you just lost a whole Honda's worth of depreciation. It's gambling with a CC cash advance to pay the rent. |

Another option would be to simply tag as a Tight End and trade as the link to the Kristian Garic article proposes, as has several Saints fans at this site have done for weeks; in that scenario, a cap on the Graham contract hit would be minimized or capped... Really against assigning that much money to such a small part of the roster - what happens when you're Porche Panamerra Turbo Executive S (nice selection) breaks down?!? You've got a gorgeous date getting anxious while you're thumbing it on the interstate... |

Tagging and trading is the worst option. A 6.7m tag instantly becomes 6.7m in dead money when traded, that's basically all of our cap space. Now you have to cut players to sign free agents, cut players to sign original draft picks, cut players to sign new draft picks..... You have to cut players to sign a practice squad. While I can appreciate the possibility, there is no plausibility to Jimmy Graham wanting to sign a contract with minimal salary and minimal guaranteed/signing bonus. To have less dead money this season his contract can't have more than a first year salary of 730k, and no larger total signing bonus of 6m. 1. No one would sign ^ crap. 2. Least we have become human barterers and forgotten the human aspect. You are trading him and he knows that as soon as he sees ^ crap. "If" he was considering that offer you just burnt any home town discount possibility because you are kicking him out of New Orleans and separating him from Drew for a few drat picks. |
Re: Jimmy Graham Contract
I'll pose the question in a different format.
I am offering you a 1st, and a 2nd round draft pick this year for 9m in your cap space this season. Do you take the deal? |

That is a gamble and a cost I wouldn't touch. Where are you going to find 3m to sign the extra draft pics? Another 3-4m to sign your original draft picks? Another 4-5m (lowball) to keep a few players you need. Forget new free agency players. And another 3m to start the season with a practice squad and some reserve for injuries? That's 15m, and you could do half of that by not giving away all your cap space to dead money. |
