Let's hope that plantar fasciitis on BOTH feet doesn't become an issue like last season.

Its Byrd, click the #2 in the picture. Deuce is 6'1", Byrd 5'10". If Loomis stands up he is taller than Byrd

Saints sign S Jairus Byrd (6 years, $54M; $28M guaranteed): C+ Grade
When it was announced that Jairus Byrd inked a 6-year deal, I wondered what the value of his contract would be. I thought that a pact worth $45 million with $22 million guaranteed would earn the Saints a B+ or maybe a B. I was not expecting $54 and $28 million, respectively.

Byrd is one of the top free agents on the market, but this is too much money for a non-quarterback and non-pass-rusher, especially for a team as strapped for cash as New Orleans. Having said that, Byrd is going from a reeling franchise to a perennial Super Bowl contender, so unlike the free agents who defect for inferior squads, he could be motivated, even in the wake of signing an extremely lucrative contract.

Yeah so we may have over-paid a bit, but so what. I'd say a C+ for value, but an A-plus on talent + need + fit.

And since no one really knows how the contract is structured, how can anyone really know that we overpaid?

And also I just discovered... its Jairus, pronounced Jair-rus, not Jerry-us. I always thought it was Jari-us.:dunce:

Re: New Orleans Saints agree to terms with safety Jairus Byrd

People see $56ml and decided it overpaid.

One of the first things I started to learn about by asking on here was the salary cap. Im surprised how many people growing up with a sport do not understand at least the basics of how it works.

The deal for Byrd could have been 5 years $45ml-8 years at $72ml if the gaureteed money is the same who cares. People see the first number and worry.Look at how Oak put thr contract, it fantastic and only has him needing to play 3-4 season snd make his gauretee and then its restructure/cut time.

Re: New Orleans Saints agree to terms with safety Jairus Byrd

Ignore total contract $ focus only on guaranteed.

At the end of the day the deal will be evaluated on his success. If he balls out as a top safety it's a win, if he flops it's a loss even if it was a 5m contact.

Honestly folks, I had very little knowledge of how the NFL salary cap worked until I climbed on board to B&G. Lots of intelligent, well informed guys/gals here to educate & enlighten.

As for Byrd, I think the guy balls out of control and Vacarro gets a much needed mentor to develop & polish his cover skills. LOVE the signing.

A re-post...

54 million over 6 years, 28 million guaranteed?

All may not be what it seems. It could be sturctured like...

Year 1..salary 1 million + guaranteed 4.7 = 5.7 million
Year 2..salary 2 million + guaranteed 4.7 = 6.7 million
Year 3..salary 3 million + guaranteed 4.7 = 7.7 million
Year 4..salary 4 million + guaranteed 4.7 = 8.7 million
Year 5..salary 7 million + guaranteed 4.7 = 11.7 million
Year 6..salary 10 million + guaranteed 4.7 = 14.7 million

Care to guess when we ask him to restructure?

I know its likely not structured in that way, but you get the picture. Its more likely a 4 year contract at about 6 to 7 million/year, then restructure or cut in year 5

Re: New Orleans Saints agree to terms with safety Jairus Byrd

It's all about the signing bonus and gaureteed money.

Re: New Orleans Saints agree to terms with safety Jairus Byrd

Most large contracts, excluding franchise quarterback ones for the most part, are filled with faux money. You typically keep these players for 3 years and dump them afterwards. Far too often do people get caught up in the magnitude of the overall contract, that they fail to recognize the likelihood of these players actually finishing out it's entirety is pretty minuscule.

We're going to get a damn good 3 years out of Byrd before we ask him to take a pay cut, restructure, or move on from him from there. I look at the deal as a 3 year 28 million dollar contract... which isn't a bad deal considering his market value and the length of time we're actually going to be able to keep a star player through his prime years.

If or when Graham signs his contract, the same principles will apply.

Re: New Orleans Saints agree to terms with safety Jairus Byrd

It's nice to have scouts that aren't even on the Saints pay roll.
It's evident to any fan that pays a little attention to the NFL that Byrd is a great player but you just know that Rex shared his opinions with Rob about him as a player and as a person.
Rex also has a win/win situation here by getting Byrd out of his division and on to his brothers team.

Look at mine in the other thread, there is a difference between Signing Bonus and guaranteed.

Signing Bonus = Upfront and prorated for the cap.

Guaranteed = He will be paid that over the life of the contract at minimum. It is distributed any way Loomis sees fit and not prorated on a schedule.

Lower cap/year hit

This is what I have

"I am going to make a SWAG attempt to look at what his contract will look like.

6 years - 54m / 11m signing bonus / 28m guaranteed
2014 1.83m SB / 3m - Cap Hit 4.83m
2015 1.83m SB / 4m - Cap Hit 5.83m
2016 1.83m SB / 4m - Cap Hit 5.83m
2017 1.83m SB / 6m - Cap Hit 7.83m
2018 1.83m SB / 12m - Cap Hit 13.83m
2019 1.83m SB / 14m - Cap Hit 15.83m

At the end of 2017 he has been paid all of his 28m Guaranteed
In 2018 he is cut and we will have a dead money of 3.66m

This is just a basic view and does not cover the bonuses for roster, work out etc..."

that's for sure the best news i've got today! the BYRDMAN wears black & gold for the next 6 years...unbelievable!

graham's contract situation is now something for mulder and scully! x-files revival!

with the signing of byrd, i think the saints should go after a no. 1 wide receiver in the upcoming draft and of course for an athletic and speedy linebacker.

still cannot believe the news....ryans D will level up immense with this signing.

looks like i have to book a flight soon from vienna (austria) to nola. wanna watch a game in the dome next season!

Other than a CB, this draft might be all offense.

Its amazing that top players want to play for us! I would love to have been a fly on the wall to hear the conversations that went on. There are other top teams that would have given him the same money with a chance to get a ring......why the Saints? Environment and coaching staff maybe?

Just watched an interview with byrd and he said that the reason he liked us immediatedly were the things that the coaches said - Rob Ryan will play him to his strengths like he does with all our defense, SP wants a turnover machine to give the ball back to the offense because we havent had one since 2009

Jairus also said he was swarmed by texts telling him how great of a DC rob ryan is, from retired vets to coaches to players still active - ultimately gave him a great feeling about our team

Interesting that the Broncos were going to pitch to Byrd. I guess RR talking to him was all he needed.

Easy decision... Do I want to be part of the 2013 4th ranked defense or the one that let Dallas put up 48 points?
Do i want to play in a dome or freez my azz off in thin air? I left Buffalo because it was freezin arse cold.

Jumping slightly off topic, but if Patrick Robinson comes back and plays as well as he did before getting hurt last year. Our entire secondary may be feared! :bng:

The NFL Radio guys were commenting that one of Byrd's best attributes is getting the entire secondary lined up and on the same page.

I agree, with Byrds on-field guidance both Robinson and White should look much improved. At least the mental mistakes should lessen.

Plus with keenan lewis locking down one side and Byrd giving help over the top, robinson or white should be able to jump alot more short routes - much like tracy did whilst sharper was here
