He's still getting his money upfront, it's just not part of his base salary anymore. He's taking $2.85 million lump sum as signing bonus. I wouldn't mind having those kinds of headaches.

Glad we worked something out. Bunkley is a very good NT.

also, Bunkley knows that if he didn't restructure he ran a pretty big risk of being a June 1 cut, and the way things are for veterans anymore, there's no way he was going to get anything close to 4.4 million/year on the open market.

The tradeoff for the Saints of course is that they are basically committed to him for at least 2015, since they can't restructure two years in a row and cutting him would be a massive dead money hit.

No... He's only getting a $300,000 signing bonus. It was a true pay cut.

look at it this way- he was due $5 mill for 2014, and cutting him would have left us a a $5 million dollar hole and no player. That money was gone either way

This way we have money now, and taking a three year average, he now makes $3.5 mill annually

That's a roster bonus, not his full signing bonus. If I have it figured right the entirety of his signing bonus would be something in the neighborhood of 2.2 million.

You can't just cut people's salary. Base salary is guaranteed. They can restructure it into signing bonus, but you can't just say "you're taking 2.85 million dollars less this year". It's not allowed.
