If we start 3-5? I'd categorize that as a dismal performance.

He said a 3-5 ROAD record is "dismal". Disappointing or underachieving I'll buy, but dismal? Hardly. 8-0 at home and 3-5 on the road is 11-5. We can do better but dismal is not a word is use.
