With the 58th pick in the draft, the Saints select Stanley Jean-Baptiste

ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Outstanding size and length to mix it up with bigger receivers. Good balance and body control. Jumps routes. Has good hands to intercept and can highpoint throws. Flashes functional strength to reroute receivers, discard blocks and tackle ball carriers. Very productive on the ball in limited time as a starter -- 21 pass PBUs and 6 INTs in 17 starts at Nebraska. Works to get better and made strides as a senior.

WEAKNESSES Stiff hips. Is not a quick-twitch athlete and struggles to mirror sudden receivers. Lacks elite top-end speed (long-strider). Green positional instincts. Picks and chooses his spots to be physical -- inconsistent run defender. Has tweener traits. Football aptitude is lacking -- could struggle to grasp and execute complex assignments. Will be a 24-year-old rookie.

BOTTOM LINE A receiver-turned-cornerback in a safety’s body, Jean-Baptiste looks the part and has intriguing ball skills, strength and upside, though he lacks elite athletic ability, is smoother than he is sudden and does not consistently play to his size. Workout numbers will dictate his ultimate role and draft value, but on tape shows skills to warrant developmental consideration from teams employing press or Cover 2.

He is raw, but he has Champ and Lewis to study under and Ryan as the DC. He has all the measurable to be great with some polishing.

Look at the picks that have fallen down. Nix is on the board, Ealy, Moses...

Would have preferred Pierre Desir or Phillip Gaines if they were going to draft a CB. I think they are more ready than Jean-Baptiste... although Jean-Baptiste probably has more upside.

We don't need to throw him out there on day one. Let him learn under Ryan and he'll be a monster.

This is a great pick and he was taken with an eye towards 2015. I would surmise his playing time is going to depend on what they do with Patrick Robinson. If Robinson stays on the team, I wouldn't be surprised to see Mr. Jean-Baptiste develop an injury before the season and being stashed on IR. But now we have 3 Corners 6 ft or taller.

The New Orleans Saints selected Nebraska cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste with their second round pick (No. 58 overall) in the 2014 NFL draft.

The 6-3, 218 pound defensive back was considered a first round talent by some analysts. He ran a 4.55 40-yard dash at the 2014 NFL Combine.

With many teams following in the wake of the Seattle Seahawks and looking for bigger cornerbacks, Jean-Baptiste fits the mold. He has several inches on the 5-11 Jabari Greer, who was released in the offseason.

That'll certainly help them keep up another trend in the NFC South--big tight ends and wide receivers.

The Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have recently added tall additions to their offense. The Buccaneers drafted 6-5, 231 pound receiver Mike Evans and 6-5, 262 pound tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins to pair with 6-5, 230 pound receiver Vincent Jackson.

The Panthers drafted 6-5, 243 pound receiver Kelvin Benjamin.

Definitely a wait and see player.

Looks the part. Needs development.

Who better to emulate than a future HOF CB with mad press cover skills?

Of all the Cb listed it is all about upside. plus without a doubt he has the best hands of any of the CB left in the draft. there will be times you will be scream at your TV but lets see what happens down the road. only 2 1/2 years playing defense. kid has a lot to learn. first thing on the punch list is to be more aggressive.

Naw. We were going to draft a corner regardless of what the other guys in our division did imo. P-Rob is in the last year of his deal and Champ is no spring chicken.

Ramon Antonio Vargas ‏@RVargasAdvocate 10s
Payton: Jean-Baptiste can play press man, and that'll help with the big pass-catchers suddenly in the NFC South.

Nice pick. I guess center next. I assume we move up into the third.

Seems like a no-brainer to me... No pressure to start immediately but will probably end up forming an amazing starting duo with Keenan Lewis.

Being physical, he will come in handy in shutting down Jimmy Graham when we play the team that signs him.

I'm willing to bet we give up our 4th rounder to trade into the 3rd for Marcus Martin.

Re: With the 58th pick in the draft, the Saints select Stanley Jean-Baptiste

Love his hands and ball skills. Looks like he needs to be more physical and aggressive. If we can develop a good pass rush, adding these DBS with good hands like we have could be brilliant. The negative trend here is Vaccarro, Baptiste(is that right?) and Byrd all 4.6. 40 yd dash times. We could be looking at the slowest secondary in the NFL.

If the CB or S is instinctive enough 40 times don't worry me...you need speed if you don't know what's going on...we like to press so he should be fine...

We are getting players that can have an impact immediately. These picks are class acts. They may not be the best talent wise but big picture we are getting much value. We are getting things that can't be measured is how I see it. Combine does not rate what we are getting.

We may still get Desir in the 4th unless Christian Jones is the pick there. I'd be happy with either, and Stork in the 5th.
