It's ridiculous.

The CBA defines positions, not roles. Hybrid doesn't matter, and the CBA has 8 years left before it can be re-written. They didnt fix it in 2011 and they are not going to fix it now.

CBA Defined positions for Franchise Tags: Page 48 Article 10 Section 7
Section 7. Salary Information:
(a) No later than February 1 of each League Year during the term of this Agreement, the NFL shall compile and disclose to the NFLPA a list of each of the five and ten largest Prior Year Salaries for players at the following positions which shall be utilized for calculating the average Prior Year Salaries of players at the positions of Fran-chise Players and Transition Players: Quarterback, Running Back, Wide Receiver, Tight End, Offensive Line, Defensive End, Interior Defensive Line, Linebacker, Cornerback, Safety, and Kicker/Punter.

That's it, 11 positions, roles do not apply. Long snapper, punt returner, gunner, slot receiver... Notice there is only Offensive Line, there is no Tackle, Guard, Center designation.

If the NFL keeps editing to cover each and every exception then this thing turns into the Federal tax Code, a 73,954 page document that is just a list of exceptions so complicated and contradictory that no 1 person fully understands all of it. The rule is what it is, make the teams conform to it, not the rule to the teams.

It was rumored we offered 10/year and they said no way.

Granted it was the infamous "sources say" statement so take it with a grain of salt.

But if true, we've already tried to meet in the middle. Sexton is going full Monte on this one and with our history of grossly overpaying, he's gonna get his 12/year.

If he gets 12 a year I hope its elsewhere and I don't care who pays it. The sad issue will be we wont get any value in compensation.

12 million dollar rumor? dam that aint a cheap rumor. i guess jimmy don't want to be a saint.

if we did offer him ten then tag him no matter what. then announce he is up for trade.

at his height and the rules about tackling he wont last long till he is out for a season with a knee. he is already showing wear and tear the past two years. these tall guys are great but i think they all will have a short shelf with the new rules in place.

they would last longer if the NFL let them get the crap knocked out of them instead of babying them. under cutting a receiver is under cutting their careers

i would take a 1 and a 2

Well like I said its a rumor.

Remember it was "rumored" that Brees wanted 20/year and we ended up... oh wait, that is what he got!

I think it's gonna be a lot like the Brees deal. A decision is gonna come down, and then a deal is going to get done within a few short days after that, like ridiculously fast. Remember how fast the Brees contract followed on the heels of the tag decision? I think they're both just waiting to see what the aribiter says. You have to, in that situation. It would not surprise me one bit if the compromise contract was already hammered out 90% of the way by both parties, and it is just sitting in somebody's drawer right now, waiting to be pulled out, the last details finalized, and signed.

My concern is he may not be as important to the team as Brees. Last year, the guy got hemmed up at the line with aggressive corners and he was not open. It's possible he could reemerge as a serious threat with additions of Colemen and Cooks, but I still think we can get the job done with a normal pay tight end who can actually block at the position.

Yeah. That's qb money and much as I love him I'm not paying the man qb money. Have a nice time in Cleveland is what I think.

Graham is simply the new Tight end mold. That position is trending to players like him, much like when Groch started, pretty soon all tight ends will perform like Graham (except probably block better).

The guy that touches the ball every snap, makes every pass and handoff along with changing the future at the line is relevant and worth the drama..
A TE is just not worth it.
