Cornerback

Suddenly we are stacked at corner.

Keenan Lewis
Corey White
Champ Bailey
Patrick Robinson
Stanley Jean-Baptiste
Rod Sweeting/Derrius Brooks/AJ Davis/Trevin Wade

Keeping in mind that we have invested significant money into the safety position and being able to play 3 safeties much of the time, it seems unlikely we keep all these guys.

Obviously Keenan is entrenched as the #1 corner. Past that, we have four guys who could realistically claim the #2 spot.

White - IMO, most of the criticism of him is complete nonsense. Once he became the starter, it took like 1 1/2 games for him to get his feet under him. After that he was everything you would expect from a good #2 corner. My guess is he is safe, if for no other reason that he's cheap. He's got to be one of the best performance/value players on the team.

Bailey - Let's be honest, we have no idea what to expect here. I could see Bailey stepping in and playing like a Hall of Famer and reviving his career just like Sharper did. But I don't think he's a lock for anything either. One of the most interesting storylines of this preseason is going to be Bailey trying to hold off all these young guys for a starting job.

Robinson - I have been one of his biggest supporters and IMO he looked like our best corner all last preseason and early in the season until he got hurt. I would really love to see him come back and be the stud I know he can be. But I also see that he's got a cap number of $2.8 million. That is almost 5 times what Corey White is making.

Jean-Baptiste - My guess is he'll be similar to Malcolm Jenkins in 2009, playing a lot of special teams and a few snaps on defense here and there. But if he surprises in preseason it'll be hard to keep him on the sidelines. A 6-foot-3 corner can come in handy with all the tall receivers in our division.

Sweeting, etc. - It is very possible that any one of these players could come out of nowhere and make the team.

Conclusion: Besides the longshots, Champ Bailey and Patrick Robinson are on the bubble. Bailey because he may not have the stuff to hang with the young cats, Robinson because he's still an uncertainty and has a high cap number. I would not even be that surprised to see Robinson cut for cap savings purposes. I could see either, or (this sounds crazy) both of these players let go before the first week of the season.

As the board's self-appointed Mr. Know-It-All when it comes to DB's, I am anxious to see how this all shakes out. Regardless, it's a far cry from a few years ago when we couldn't even find two good corners. Now we have 5.

Re: Cornerback

Keenen Lewis and Champ Bailey will be the starting bookend CBs.

White, Robinson and Jean-Baptist will nickel, dime and penny.

Past that point, we need help.

Lot's of potential there, but only one proven starter with an aging all pro. I think Bailey is going to be a pleasant surprise to many. I think White and Robinson are in because they have shown potential on the field. Baptist is raw and will get his chance\time to grow. The others are in a contest between each other an the numbers. Do we keep more because they show potential or do you keep less because none of them show what it takes? CB probably has more question marks than any other position. How many does everyone think we keep?

Re: Cornerback

Lewis is #1 with White being #2 and Bailey in the nickel. P Rob is still P Rob and as far as I can tell he isn't the answer. TC will decide. Baptiste will be on the final 53 because he would never make it past waivers. I am really excited to see what Toon does this year with hopefully enough time to heal.

There is a good chance that we keep six corners. We'll just have to wait and see.

Im keeping an eye on Darrius Brooks.I have no idea what this kid can bring to the table in this league, but from what Ive seen of him in highlights,he looks to be very promising.

I looked good in my highlights, it's that 10.4 forty time that did me in! They call them highlights for a reason.

Unfortunately there is no way Stanley Jean-Baptiste makes it to the practice squad. I'll offer my opinion that Keenan, Champ, Stanley and Corey are locks. I know Patrick has alot of supporters on the board and I want him to do great, but his place on the roster in contingent on his training class performance. I stress this because you can't have a nickle or dime CB making almost $3 Mill a season. He would be traded before that happens. Just looking at it from an economics standpoint.

Re: Cornerback

I see it this way:
#1 Lewis
#2 Robinson
#3 White
#4 Bailey
#5 Sweeting
Then it get's fuzzy. Jean-Baptiste will either be #6 or on "IR" when the last cuts hit camp
