I feel like if you can stand next to a Native American and call him redskin with out feeling any sense unease or awkwardness then redskin is not as offensive that I thought

I personally would never disrespect anyone on purpose but what if a Native American owned the team and called them pale face with decal on helmet will your views be the same or differ?

Apache Helicopters, Tomahawk cruise missiles, Chinooks. People in D.C. and the DOD need to consider treading lightly on this subject. They are the #1 culprit of using Native American symbolism for alternate reasons other than defining or respecting a culture.

If they have a problem with the Redskins then they should have an even bigger problem with the names of Army helicopters since the Army actually slaughtered entire Native American cultures to include women and children and now use their names and symbols on their war machines.

The anger in some circles over the "Redskins" nickname for Washington's NFL team isn't going away, no matter how much the league would like to put it off until it does.

The latest commentary came in the form of an advertisement that ran in some markets during Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday night. The ad, which has been on YouTube since January but had not gotten as much widespread exposure as it did during the Heat-Spurs game, is two minutes on YouTube but the Washington Post wrote that a one-minute version would run during the game. According to the Post, it was scheduled to run in seven major cities during halftime of the game.

In the ad, the culture and history of Native Americans are celebrated. Near the end of the ad, the narrator says, "Native Americans call themselves many things. The one thing they don't ... "

And then it cuts to a photo of a Washington Redskins helmet. It's powerful.

According to the Post, the ad was paid for by the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, which is about an hour northeast of San Francisco. The tribe would not tell the Post how much the ad cost, only that it was a "significant investment."

“It’s just a time to get people thinking about putting an end to outward hatred and using sports as a tool to focus on racism,” Chairman Marshall McKay said, according to the Post.

The issue surrounding Washington's nickname has been debated for many years and gets more heated every year, it seems. Politicians have argued against it. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has said he doesn't plan to change the name, citing a study that suggests a majority of Native Americans don't find the nickname offensive. The NFL has never made any comments or taken any action that would indicate it has any desire to change the name, either.

Until that happens, there will be a vocal opposition that won't stop fighting it.

Y! SPORTS

W.T. Sherman is my favorite General. After all he did order Atlanta to be burned to the ground.

I have some Native American friends and they say fighting about this is ignorant. They said Washington Redskins name was because of the fierce nature and the never give up style of the Indian people. Although the name can be seen as disrespectful to some, most see it as a sign of respect. They also said that "true" native Americans that still live the life of their people could care less. They are not caught up in our way of life.

Next we will have to change the names of all animal teams because PETA says we are disrespecting the animals.......

I think falcons should definitely feel disrespected by the team they symbolize.

The n-word is not a skin color... today it has become an attitude.

Good take. I would be fine with the palefaces but I can also understand why some want the name redskin changed. But it would destroy a bunch of historical significance. Essentially the current Redskins would be considered an expansion team and completely different team and some allegiances to them would move and maybe some not. People are drawn to historical franchises. Some are even drawn to icons or colors. This is an interesting conversation though.

On another note the Cleveland Indians will now be renamed Cleveland Native Americans , and all the East Indians are going on strike and shutting down every cab and 7-11 in the county to protest.
