I was wrong
I'm not too proud to admit when I was wrong, since I'm usually so dam right ;) , but I was definitely wrong about quite a few things this year.
1. 10-6. I thought this team could win 10 games in spite of the coaching staff. I thought an 8-8 team that lost several very close games, combined with fewer key injuries, and an easier schedule, in the weakest division in football could eek out 2 more wins. I was wrong. I severley underestimated what poor coaching and pitiful play calling can do. :( 2. The Offensive line. What I thought would be a soild unit completely disappointed me. I thought replacing Fontenot/Bentley with a stronger run oriented combo of Bentley/Holland would work. I though Riley, who had a solid reputation as a run blocker would shake his inconsistency label. I thought Gandy have several more good years left. I was wrong. I wish we had Jerry back. :( 3. TE unit - I thought Boo Williams would improve enough to flirt with a pro-bowl selection. I also thought Conwell just had an off 2003. I was wrong. Neither looked good enough to even re-sign for 2005. Our two best TE's may be a practice squad youngster and a blocking TE claimed off the street. :( 4. SLB- I was positive that at least either Hodge or Allen would step it up this year and improve their game. Both look even worse this year than last. Not an easy accomplishment. ;) 5. Two TE set. I thought this philosophy was a perfect solution to keep defenses from stacking the line against Deuce. Maybe Item #3 above is the reason for item #5. But nonetheless, I was wrong. :( 6. Continuity. I though a middle of the pack defense and a potentially explosive offense would benefit from the absense of a massive roster turn-over that we've become accustomed to during Haslet's reign. :( 7. Atlanta- I didn't think that a complete coaching change, combined with very little pesonnel change would swing a teams record so drastically. I was wrong. Actually I'm glad I was wrong because if Atlanta can change their entire staff after going 5-11 with the worst defense in the NFL, add only 2 or 3 key guys and win the division... We can too. :D |
