Its not THAT bad

We took them to over time in THEIR house. We screwed up by turning the ball over. No matter what some here might think the Falcons are a good team. A year before last they went 13-3 and were a few plays away from going to the Super Bowl. They have 4 pro bowl receivers so its no wonder our DBs looked bad. They are going to make a lot of defenses look bad. Our offense is looking awesome. Cooks looks as advertised and has all the potential to be ROY. We will destroy these guys in the Super Dome. We basically spotted them two scores and still took them to over time.

I think overtime rules blow. It should be like the playoffs so the first field goal can't win it unless the other team gets a chance and blows it.
Yea, I'm pissed, DOUBLE pissed because I had to watch this crap on DVR and couldn't go through it with my fellow Who Dates.
We have a playoff team and we will get at least one more shot at them.

Cant agree
If we end up as second second seeds like we did in 2011 we will look back on every stupid loss as one of the reasons if things do not go well. We need to get home advantage in the playoffs(assuming we get there)

Each and every season we look back on losses. Its what humans do, well Saints fans that are humans.

Its like trying to enjoy a Bourré game and my in laws are reliving hands from hours ago.

Re: Its not THAT bad

From a NOLA article:
"The Saints allowed 568 yards, the second-highest total in franchise history and a Falcons' franchise record. They allowed more yards on Sunday than ever allowed in a single game in 2012, the unit that set the record for most yards allowed in league history (7,042)."

It's not that bad huh... can't get much worse defensively.

Re: Its not THAT bad

It was a bad game, doesn't mean we have a bad team. We're still likely an 11-5 or 12-4 team.

We have 8 road games, we're simply 0-1 on the road

I am not going to really judge the team until after 4 games. Typically 4 games into the season you can see who is a contender and who are pretenders.

This isn't a good first showing, but if you have issues you want them exposed sooner rather than later.

D-backfields are similar to o-lines. They have to gel. Remember how long it took for out offensive line to gel last season? The Dallas game.

Look at how much wholesale change has happened to out defensive secondary, it will take a bit of time, and it helps a whole frikken lot when they have tape on a team to watch while preparing. :-)

It may not happen over night, but it will.

I agree...

However, our D-line was a strength last year and right now they look weak.

Beyond that I have to question some of the schemes. Having your safeties play 40 yds off against a west-coast offense??? Additionally the CBs were playing 10-15 yds off most of the game. If we don't press the WR at the line it's going to be a long day. Last year we played almost nothing but press coverage and it worked well.

The Dude 09-07-2014 06:48 PM

Re: Its not THAT bad

I said in preseason it was foolish to believe that our D would pick up where it left off last year, even with the additions of Byrd and other upgrades. Going from worst ever in the history of the NFL to 4th overall is insane. A good defense is not built that fast. We will still have a much better defense than year before last, probable middle of the pact. With the way our offense played our defense doesn't need to be top 5.
They had a bad game. Better now than in the playoffs. We will be fine and will be in the playoffs again. Like I said the Falcons are a very good offensive team. Ryan and the defense are under the spotlight now and know they aren't invincible like some thought in the pre season. Like Oak said, they need time to learn how to play together. They will gel.

Re: Its not THAT bad

well now that reality set in and all those pre season press clipping can be put under the puppy. we might be ok.

week one on the road in the NFC south is never easy despite anything people may say. but boy oh boy the defense needs to go back to basics ... like tackling. and Ryan needs to do some tweaking. lets see what he can do.

players are going to humble in tape sessions and that should get their heads back on straight. I hope they come out with an attitude like they had last year. saving face is a great motivation tool. because this week non of them looked like they had a clue. coaches and player

Re: Its not THAT bad

I just don't get why some posters are folding up shop already. For f*ck sakes, even after giving up 500 yards, we had to fumble in overtime to lose (I'm pretty confident that Brees and co would have put up 6 on that drive had that not happened). Yeah, it sucks but this season is far from over (don't worry, I'll save you all a seat on the bandwagon after week 2).
And don't kid yourself, Greer or Bailey are in no way an upgrade over what we have. Don't be stupid.

Atlanta has some weapons this season, a healthy Jackson and Hester.
Arthur spent some of your Home Depot money wisely.

Re: Its not THAT bad

The Falcons have always been our biggest rivalry. Even when we beat them it's only decided by an average of 6 points. It was their house and they got lucky a lot today. If we would've stuck the first 2 drives in the end zone game over at 21-0

You need to keep your day job and leave the coaching to the coaches. There is nothing "west coast" about the Falcons. They have a vertical offense, just like we do.

I have to agree with him, even our corners were lining up deeper than usual. I just don't think that scheme works for us, we fare better letting our DBs play aggressive man while we blitz.

Matt Ryan is notorious for dink an dunk, and we let them play their game all day long.
Headscratcher for sure.

Re: Its not THAT bad

And let's try and understand why our safeties were lining up deeper than usual.

You have Julio Jones who runs a 4.2, Hester who is really quick, Jaquizz Rodgers who is 4.2...

You play back and limit the big play, giving your defense more opportunities to make plays; it's called a bend but don't break defense.

We better blow out Cleveland or we will be in trouble. Carolina won today w/o Newton even though it was the Bucs they beat.

Newton wasn't the reason they won the past 3 seasons.

Sure glad we didn't allow the big play. we might have been able to hold them to 24-27 points................
This loss is on our DC

That worked real well didn't it... oh wait...

You sure as hell don't let fast WR get clean breaks off the line. Bump and run is how you beat guys like Jones. Should have played press-man with a single high safety and a robber safety underneath. That's what worked last year...

Nothing west-coast about the falcons... your joking right?

They are known for the dink and dunk passing game...

saintsfan403 09-07-2014 10:16 PM

Re: Its not THAT bad

Here's how you deal with Julio: have your corners jam the sh*t out of him at the line and disrupt his routes/timing so your pass rush can get there. Remember what we did to Dez Bryant when we played the cowboys last year? We had a safety and a corner jam him and he couldn't get off the line. Had today's plan neutralized either Julio or Roddy White, we might have won but we switched to that scheme at the end of the first half and that's when we started giving up huge plays.

I, for one, thought Atlanta's offensive line looked mightily improved.
Jake Matthews is a stud at left tackle, as is Jon Asamoah at guard. Mike Tice as an offensive line coach also seems to be a good hire for them.

I agree that our pass rush this game was lacking, but I also think Atlanta isn't the same team they were last year.

YES, it was an L today. A big, hard L to a division team today.

Re: Its not THAT bad

I honestly think Atlanta will fall by the end of the season. Their line was ok, but Ryan was flushed out quite a bit, we just couldn't bring him down. Their defense looked awful too. It wasn't like they dominated this game, I could see them hitting a wall against any team with a half decent pass rush while they get carved up defensively.

jeanpierre 09-07-2014 11:07 PM

Re: Its not THAT bad

Premature Contract. Don't like keep aging defensive veterans paying them so that they're locked in (see LBs Lofton, Hawthorne)...

He got the majority of snaps because of his new contract; Tyrunn Walker outplayed Galette on one play...

We needed more of Walker's physical style of play and he was the only one who gave it in the front seven...

Galette is going to be Will Smith 2.0; it doesn't matter how much you pay, a turd is still a turd...

Galette is a one-trick pony, at best, who got beat physically by a back up linemen...

Ryan should have rotated more of the front seven to keep 'em fresh and to geaux with the hot hand(s)...

jeanpierre 09-07-2014 11:12 PM

Re: Its not THAT bad

This team should win this division; but that defensive effort will get them ten wins at best...

Payton must run the ball more than pass to instill a physical persona for this team in a physical game...

Running the ball will also limited the exposure of this defense until they can figure things out...

Parcells won with those Giants teams not only because he had Lawrence Taylor, but because he understood at the end of the day you can beat a talented offense (49ers) with physical, punishing football...
