How I became a saints fan.
Saw an article about this on my newsfeed. I don't want everyone on my friends list knowing the darkest corners of my life so I'm posting it here.
I was a Panthers fanatic. Delhomme , Smith , Foster , Peppers the whole 9. Shortly after Katrina I got a Summer Job at Six Flags over Georgia in which I met two Elderly Women who had lost everything in Katrina who you bet we're huge Saints fans. They worked there for long hours and Minimum wage to pay rent for a shack that they rented. Basically they were refugees , they had grandchildren to care for and the children's parents were lost or died in the storm. At first I was reluctant to speak to them , it seemed they were always angry and most everyone just stayed out of their way. One day I saw Ms. Elisa ( as she had instructed us to call her ) crying while on a Lunch break in a corner to herself. She was mean and nasty , I really didn't want to speak , just sit and enjoy my lunch. But My heart wouldn't let me. I asked her what was wrong and she let it all out. She had An advanced stage of Cancer and wasn't given a long life expectancy. The other elder lady who was her sister would be burdened the load of carrying 2 Families on her 80 something year old frame. She wept , asking why god had dealt her such a hand. Losing your life's work a retirement fund , a home , your children , into losing your own life when the ones you love most need you. I couldn't even begin to understand the great pain this lady had endured. I felt foolish for being like everyone else and simply looking the other way. She died shortly after the Halloween Season ended and the next year her sister passed as well the following year, Her sisters name was Jocelyn. We grew close at work. She gave me a Saints keychain she Knitted with her own hands. After she passed I quit working there. I'd see the spots they would chat with me and fill me with wisdom and life. It was too depressing to return. They were gone but had left something powerful with me. Hope. My own life spiraled out of control to the point to where I began to contemplate suicide. I was in my dorm room. I cut the Tv that my roommate and I shared on and began to sulk in my own self pity when those thoughts began running through my head. They were very convincing , heavily persuasive. Just before I did , the tv channel changed ( my theory is my roommate auto tuned the guide to the game ... ) He was a huge Patriots fan and wanted to see if the Dolphins were going to worth a damn this year. And they were playing Ms. Evelyn and Ms. Jocelyn's saints. I remembered them and decided hell , I can at least watch the game. At first it was pitiful , down and what appeared to be out. But then they started drumming back to life. TD after TD , they came back and Won it to stay undefeated. What a magical game , I was filled with hope , there was something special about this team. I decided to put off my date with destiny just to see how far they could get. Each game I watched was like being with the Sisters again. Special. That Year shortly after my birthday , February 4th the Saints won the whole shebang. I was hooked. Still am. Love is what turned me into a saints fan. |

Cool story. We all have to find inspiration and hope somewhere in life otherwise it's just a bunch of depressing nonsense.
