Coach Sean Payton & Saints need to get back to the basics

SportsNola.com writer David Grubb writes a truthful analysis of the Saints season and a laundry list of reasons on both sides of the ball as to why the saints season started to decline fast.

"The reasons for the demise are numerous:
  • They haven’t pressured quarterbacks. The Saints just have five sacks in four games. At this point last season, they had 12.
  • Lack of pressure has led to loads of passing yards for opposing quarterbacks. The defense has allowed 1090 passing yards, tied for second worst in the league...."
(read the full list at SportsNola.com, link at the bottom of this article.)
Grubbs continues highlighting criticisms of the Saints offense and their sub-par play this season:

"The team’s biggest perceived strength going in to the season has not performed at a level that fans have come to expect.
  • The Saints rank just 12th in the league offensively. They sit behind teams like Washington, Kansas City, and Miami.
  • While the Saints are 3rd in passing yards, Drew Brees has just 7 touchdown passes which ranks tied for eighth in the NFL...."
(read the full list at SportsNola.com, link at the bottom of this article.)
Ultimately, David Grubb puts the blame and responsibility for any possible turnaround on Saints head coach Sean Payton.

No coach this side of Bill Belichick wields the kind of power within an organization that Payton does in New Orleans. This is his team, filled with his guys.

Then the writer points out alarming facts about Coach Payton's New Orleans Saints and their back-to-back playoff record.

Those things aside, the fact remains that under Payton the Saints have not won playoff games in back-to-back seasons, and it looks like that streak will continue barring a major turnaround. The team cannot play enough on the road, going 0-3 this season and losing eight of their last nine away from New Orleans overall.

Very doom and gloom article. Even stretches the truth to fit the authors negative agenda.

Yeah, after reading again, I guess it was negative. I usually try to concentrate on the upcoming opponent. Still, he makes a point - SP is the head coach and eventually blame will fall on him if the team doesn't start playing fundamental football.

That's true. And it would be tough to fill an article with positives about the Saints season so far.

I have to respectfully disagree. The points the author brought up are valid.

Simply put, if the defense can put together a single 3rd down play that is equivalent to Juniors safety each drive, then the saints would have a lot less to worry about.

The yards both on the ground and in the air that the defense is giving up is a function of not pressuring the QB and not getting off the field on 3rd down.

And honestly just like yesterday, the offense doesn't finish drives and has too too too too too (is that enough) many turnovers.

The record is clear, when the offense doesn't turn over the ball, we win.

So it's actually keeping it simple. Pressure the opposing QB by any means and don't turn the ball over.

Only Atlanta choked in an unchokable situation... Life is definitely good.

Hopefully, we get to start seeing more positive articles after Tampa.

"Saints find their Mojo"
"Watchout, the Saints are back in town"
"Saints serve notice"

Something along these lines.

Yep, can't really blame them for writing negative stuff, it's gotta be hard to find the positives.

When nothing seems to be going right there is only one thing to blame, the lack of leadership and direction. The offense is inconsistent at best and the defense is awful along with the special team's sucking as usual.

Payton do your job!
