With that said I still like the move but that contract????

I still like his contract more than the one they gave to Junior.

Bush already made the most of his opportunities this season. The fifth-year safety has five less tackles than Byrd, while only being on the field a third of the time.

After all, this same defense was able to play as well as it did last year without a safety the caliber of Byrd. Vaccaro was a rookie, while veteran Malcolm Jenkins played the entire season with a negative grade from Pro Football Focus (subscription required). Bush, on the other hand, played the third-most snaps at safety last year and received a positive grade.

Wouldn't the above quoted stat by Mitch depend largely on defensive play-calling? As in putting the other guy in on a running down and close to the LOS rather than lining up the other guy 30 yards off the LOS?

Trudat Fin, Bush plays a different role which affords him more opportunity to make tackles.

I did read an article in the off-season that claimed Bush wasn't as great as many thought, due to what the defense required of him.

But we'll see, I think we kept Atlanta from signing him for a reason. We're about to find out if we were right.

Hmmm. This seems to belie the fact that no matter the record, one of the NFC South teams will get into the playoffs.

Last I checked, the Saints were just a bit more that 1 game out of first place in the division.

Also the last I checked the Saints have 5 more division games to play.

The Giants have won the Superbowl twice in the last decade with 9-7 records going in.

The season isn't over until you are mathematically eliminated.

Tanking before playing a single game in October? Seriously?

I honestly don't think Byrd lining up so far back has anything to do with the play call. That's where he always set up in Buffalo's defense too.

Here's an analysis: All-22: The Jairus Byrd Question | Birds 24/7

Now, what I think has happened here: Ryan tried to shoehorn Byrd into the defense, letting him play his same deep free safety spot. That means all the other DB's are forced to play it safe because they know they don't have immediate help. They don't play as aggressive, and therefore not as confident.

I do not think signing Byrd was a mistake at all. But I do think they have struggled to figure out some chemistry issues in the secondary. Eliminating the problem of how to incorporate him into the defense might just make things a lot better.

Might be a blessing in disguise.

Show me someone who wants to tank, and I'll show you a loser.

I want no part of any player, coach, or fan that wants to lose on purpose.

I think Bush is gonna go in and shake things up...I think he actually adds attitude to the defense...now you have TWO hard hitting safeties and Bush has speed...I'm excited to see him finally get his chance to shine

Have to see a list of Loomis' foray into Veteran free agency...

Brees is gonna be a Hall of Famer...

Despite Darren Sharper's alleged recent legal troubles, he was the difference maker in the Saints' SuperBowl run...

Greer, smallish, got banged up some but was a success when he was healthy...

Jon Goodwin's first run with the Saints was solid...

You have some valid points, but what I was trying to say was that it's hardly useful to compare apples to oranges or let's say a MLB to an OLB. And this is in response to what Mitch quoted, not anything he himself said.

Re: Jarius Byrd to IR

They only allow eleven on the field at a time.
Byrd laid doo-doo with the other 10 guys he was with.
We will still have eleven on the field without him,
and eveybody has to do their job which includes covering
one of the other 10 from time to time.
Our problem has been, no one is doing their job well enough
to be able to offer assistance elsewhere.
I sincerely hope he wasn't in the 1st group just so we get our monies worth.
If he was actually the better choice, then it's not going to get better.
Somebody teach these guys in coverage how to look back after 3 seconds.
Double-move OK, triple-move maybe, but NEVER a quadruple-move...
Turn and look for the ball, even if you look like shoe-string-tied Fred Thomas,
make a play on the ball. By the way, Fred Thomas didn't miss tackles...EVER.
As bad as Jason David was, he lead the team in interceptions.
All I'm saying is be good at something...then work on the rest.

Seem to remember media and some fans pi$$ing their pants when Will Smith was injured and everyone wondered where the pass rush was gonna come from...

Whatever is going on with Big John at Nose Tackle needs to get fixed so he can crush that middle, draw the double teams and allow the ends to swing the corners down and let the outside linebacker get in the quarterbacks face...

Say what you want, but contracts/salary cap influences playing time, veteran status seems to be way too important to this coaching staff...

Let the young guns plays; they'll make mistakes, but they'll keep swarming...

Just curious. What would the total cost hit be if the Saints suddenly decided, "Sorry, Jairus, we have decided we are going in a different direction" and just walked away from him during the off season? Because between his back and his meniscus and his foot, ankle, groin, etc it's honestly kinda hard to feel like he is going to be the answer or the future of the team, long term.

Maybe he was nursing an unreported injury......that could explain his subpar play.

26,300,000, 26 million three hundred thousand That's the total guaranteed amount including what we have already paid
