Junior Galette: Current New Orleans Saints defenders better than veterans they replaced | NOLA.com

"I mean, c'mon, who are you talking about?" He asked, laughing. "The guys that replaced them are better than they were."

Galette, of course, was talking about departed veterans like Will Smith, Roman Harper, Malcolm Jenkins and Jonathan Vilma.

"Here, the guys that replaced them are better than the guys we had. It's not even close. Across the board," Galette said. "I'll take Kenny Vaccaro any day over any safety. And I'll take (Cam Jordan) over any defensive end. Jairus Byrd over any safety."

Vilma and Smith were the only names he mentioned specifically.

"Lofton is putting up numbers Vilma never put up. So. It is what it is," Galette said.

Lofton has consistently been one of the top tacklers in the league and currently ranks No. 5 with 110 combined tackles.

Galette, a team captain, made his point in reference to a lack of leadership the Saints have been accused of having since losing the veterans. That's not the case, he said.

"They asked me something about leadership qualities, do you feel like this team's missing ... I'm like no," he said. "I feel like we have the leaders we have here now are just better than the leaders we had in the past. You know, I've been here. It is what it is. Yeah, they won a Super Bowl. But we're young and we'll get through it."

"I feel like, you know, he's (Will Smith) never been a better player than me, regardless from whatever stage he was at. Or Cam."
Junior's turning into a doosh.

Considering Brees wasn't even alive when Archie played for the Saints I don't see why Brees would even attempt to bash him.

vilma was nothing but class here and gave us everything he had. when he was here he was phenomenal, and if you gave me the choice between the two, in their prime, i'D take JV all day

I agree with his passion. But that safety comment?? Hell No....Sharper had more interceptions by week 10 than this team has wins.

Re: Junior bashes former teammates

No need for the comments at all

The players we has just dismissed did more for this team than anyone currently on this defense.

Vilma, Smith, Harper, Jenkins can all have a nice bit of jewellery to prove it.

I'd take Vilma over anyone we have at LB.

Big talk by a man with less than 30 sacks through 5 years too

And seeing as how Lofton has 850 tackles through his career so far, I don't see where Jr is wrong...

lee909 12-05-2014 02:53 AM

Re: Junior bashes former teammates

Vilma didn't play that many more games than Loft on and played the last couple if years hurt

Lot on
108 games
850 tackles
7 sacks
27 P defended
3 interceptions

Vilma
125 games
871 tackles
10.5 sacks
35 p defended
12 interceptions
One Superbowl ring

For me the stats have little to do with the argument though,Junior has had one good season in 5 and is taking unneeded ****s at players that were major reasons in this team going from one of the worst teams in the league to being one that is a playoff team more often than not.

First of all, I want to thank social media, ie Twitter for once again pretty much contributing nothing of value to society.

Secondly, I think I liked Junior better when he wasn't thinking at all but rather just going out there and playing his ball's off.

This league's one step away from becoming the WWE, IMO.

This is on Loomis...

Should never have extended this punk...

He should keep his mouth and Twitter account closed...

Can't stop the run, can't secure his assignment, always looking for a sack with the same limited moves...

And if we're going to a 34 defense shouldn't we have spent his funs on a tru OLB?!?

And if we're going to stay a 43 defense, he;s undersized for that as well...

Third down '"specialists' getting three-down money...

This is on Loomis...

It definitely wasn't the classiest way to respond to criticism. I think Junior's just a young, passionate guy who doesn't think before he speaks. All of the criticism of our defense and speculation that Rob Ryan may get fired is probably really getting to Junior as a defensive captain. Sure, the smart thing to do woud have been to prop up our current players and say that they're on the same level as the great players that they're replacing, and that's a lesson that Junior has now undoubtedly learned. Maybe he's not quite ready to be a team captain maturity-wise but I can tell that he's definitely trying and I respect the passion he displays. He just needs to develop a little gravitas and I'm sure that will come with age.

Re: Junior bashes former teammates

I think Jr. has a way to go to catch Will Smith. Smith was also the victim of being told to add weight to be run stopper lose weight to be a pass rusher and did all of this without complaining. Jr might want to check stats before he runs his mouth and I like Jr but let your play do the talking.

So would it have been better of him to say "Nah we should have kept Harper, Jenkins, Vilma & Fresh Prince. The guys that replaced them here are not very good." I would rather have him say nothing but he did, I won't hate on a man saying his current teammates are better. I mean would any of us tell our wives/husband that our ex's were better. Nah we wouldn't do that at all and expect the house to be happy.

Re: Junior bashes former teammates

There are ways of saying things though.
It would be easy to say that "of course we miss some of the vets but we believe the younger guys can be as good if not better than those before us. "

Those guys won a Superbowl and had multiple good years and playoff performances, non of these players have

To me it's just another reminder not be fooled by the optimism of a single win against Pittsburgh with Ben having a gimpy hand. This team is in complete disarray. ESPECIALLY inside the locker room. What we have seen from the team this year, as far as character and personality and integrity goes, quite frankly we have not really seen anything like it before, under Sean Payton's entire tenure here. I don't think he is in control at all. It all reminds me so much of '12, the time when nobody was in charge, and nobody was responsible, and the coaches couldn't do anything to fix it.

What a crappy thing to say. I mean, he's not wrong, really...at least in terms of talent.

but those guys all did a lot for the organization. Junior needs to keep his yap shut. He's supposed to be a defensive captain, if he wants to keep wearing that patch he needs to show a little more leadership, which by the way, is probably the main thing we're lacking right now.

Definitely can't stop the run very well and has never heard of keeping containment on his end of the field. We need a OLB to go with Haralson, a CB, another NT, and 1 or 2 ILBs who can cover and who don't run right into the trash or make so many tackles so far down the field on run plays. Junior is a pass rush specialist only.

Of course, but Lofton didn't replace 2009 Jonathan Vilma. He replaced broken-down 2012 Jonathan Vilma.

Re: Junior bashes former teammates

Look, I get it. Junior is frustrated because his performance and the defense as a unit SUCK, and he's obviously been paying too much attention to all the sports pundits that suggest that losing key defensive players last year is the reason for the Saints' defensive woes. And they're probably right.
I understand the frustration, but when it comes to commenting publically about himself or the team, he isn't ready for prime time.
Seems Junior has trouble stopping the run and his mouth.

Barry from MS 12-05-2014 08:30 PM

Re: Junior bashes former teammates

This dude is embarrassing himself and this organization, in my opinion. He ain't got a ring. Smith & Vilma do. He absolutely did not have to say what he said, frustrated or not.

Tell the press the usual company line of "We're playing one game at a time and we're not looking in the past and we've got some really great guys who are really working hard to get the job done this week for the win."

Give the "C" to a real leader next season and press forward. Already tired of this clown's mouth. Can't stop the run, can't do jack squat in a very limited pass coverage role, and certainly can't stop his mouth (sorry, Saintsfan4ever...stole that from you, bro)...

So essentially a 3rd down Clown who can sometimes get to the QB and sometimes get a holding call but disappears far too often on passing downs for that contract and that "C". Just keep your mouth shut about players who were achieving greatness and a Lombardi Trophy while you were transferring from Temple to Stillman College.

JR needs to learn once a saint always a saint and the way we part ways with most of the players gives him no right to say anything especially since he is up for the one year wonder award this year. if you can not put up then shut up.

Re: Junior bashes former teammates

Stand by what I said earlier, this is on Loomis for extending the punk from Port-au-Prince...

The one good thing that may come of this is that if he's trying to get out of here, he may have done us a favor by playing Payton and Loomis' hand...

And maybe, just maybe, we can get a true 3-4, 3-down linebacker...
