A bright spot
I am going to do my damndest to bring some positivity to this forum and here's something I have enjoyed seeing, which is the emergence of some pretty good young receivers on offense.
Stills looks like a #1 wideout these days. One of the most consistent players on the team. That's great to see from a second-year player, especially at a position where players don't develop quickly. He is extremely polished - catches the ball well, runs great routes, understands how to create space for himself and find soft spots in the D. Basically, a young Lance Moore with lots more speed. Cooks, before he got hurt, seemed to be putting it together and becoming that multi-purpose weapon that I think we all envisioned. His yardage numbers were not great, but he caught a ton of passes, moved the chains and was starting to become a real deep threat. He is going to be the guy who makes people get out of their seats every time he gets the ball. Toon has also looked pretty consistent lately and SP seems to have more faith in him with a big increase in playing time. Clearly he is being groomed to take over for Colston as the big inside receiver. Those 4-catch, 40-yard games are nothing to sneeze at when you look at how many different guys typically play in a Payton offense. I would also throw Josh Hill into this discussion as an up-and-comer. He looks like a guy who could do a lot more if he had more playing time. I'm impressed with his hands and run-after-catch ability. He's even made a few deep plays. I think he could become a pretty valuable part of the offense very soon, much like David Thomas was on the Superbowl team. As for the wide receivers, this was a position that many here (myself included) considered a weak spot coming into the season. I don't think that's true at this point. Now if we can only rebuild the middle of the o-line as quickly we may get back to being that crazy-good offense again. |
