Plenty of blame to go around

D line could not get pressure, but Ryan had the DB's playing soft coverage

Literally the reason why QB's would carve us up so easily.

I think Ryan will get another year, but I want us to get more physical and use press coverage more.

why is it the joe vitts of the saints don't get sent up the latter as they say in coaches clicks, where there in this fraternity that you will get an opportunity to climb the latter, but like the vitts that stay in the one circle of friends lets me think he just don't have it and nobody wants them.

I wanted big rob sent packing myself several times this year. but you wonder he had no staff to give support. is it that payton calls the shots and wants to protect against the run than have a sack frensey and a 200 yard a game rusher that kills you. we were so lazy some games than some we had sack mania style Jorden vs galette . face it we need another big time rusher that has multible moves, trade off one if we have to. and lets please start looking for another young, colston with more moves' no more short guys.

I do agree that if we are sticking with Rob Ryan he needs to hand pick all of his positional coaches and have 100% autonomy to deal with the defense his way. If that fails he's out. As stated, he was handed his assistants, and while we assume they preached his message, are they the ones to be able to coach what he schemed in the one on one format required of a positional coach? I would give him one more year. Normally you want to see progress year after year but I hate how this league has become a one and done for many players and coaches. What happened to 3 and 5 year plans and allowing things to develop. It's that inconsistency in system that leads to perennial failure in this league. Look at any team that is constantly flipping coaching staffs and you see failure. Look at times with consistent coaching and you see lasting success. Give things time to develop.

This defense has a lot of immature players who were incapable of handling the success of last year and fooled themselves into thinking they were all that. And subsequently they were unable to handle the failure.

As for Payton, he has gone stale and the league has caught up with his tendencies. I expect to see changes from him to determine whether he has the ability to move forward and not continue a backwards slide.

We have a tough offseason ahead of us.

Keep Ryan and allow him bring in his own assistants and let some non performing players go, as they admitted in their plea for keeping Ryan, it's the players fault.

We havent had a fundamentally sound defense in a while. Ever notice any other teams trying to steal coaches from our defense since Dennis Allen? Rob stays, every one else can go. If we send Ryan packing, I want a DC who will turn this joke of a defense into a solid group of players. I have no doubt we have enough talent to consistently produce a top 10 defense.

I do too my friend. We have numerous players that have proven they can play at an above average level. So many regressed this season its mind boggling.

A couple of upgrades here and there and I think top 10 is easily attainable.

I think the biggest difference from last year to this year was the lack of hustle we had this year

2013 when an opponent caught the ball or they ran against us, our defenders would fly to them and have literally 3 guys there all making the tackle.

See for example in the game vs rams last year, rams FB breaks a tackle by our linebacker in the flats and keeps fighting for yards, tyrunn walker and Kenny vaccaro come out of nowhere and completely flatten him.

Compared to this year, I saw no hustle, when guys were missing tackles, others were standing around watching it happen.

That and the fact that our D line literally got no pressure all year, we had 49 sacks last year, I don't think we've even got 25 this year.

We can upgrade, but if we lack coaches who can develop them and/or get the best out of them then what's the point? There are some nice options at linebacker in the draft, but who gonna get them to perform at their potential? Maybe I'm looking to deep into this, but the total flop Vacarro had in one year has me looking for answers deeper than us just needing better talent.

The thing is, the Goodell bounty stuff is STILL in Payton's head. TO THIS DAY. His mind has been completely messed up, ever since it happened to him. Like when you put a prisoner in a dark box for a month or something, he's not the same man when he comes out. Payton is NOT going to easily give up control of the defensive side of the locker room, to some DC's personal assistants that Payton can't control. Those same old same old coordinators are in there for a reason, because they are Yes Men to Payton, and because he got railroaded, and the Bountygate stuff is STILL all up inside Payton's head TO THIS DAY. On one level, he is completely and totally paranoid. Control freak, yes. Perfectionist, yes. He always was one, but the aftershocks of the Bounty thing has made it spin off in weird ways.

I think maybe one or two coordinators may go, emphasis on MAY go, out the door. But a wholesale house cleaning, top to bottom? I don't see it happening, unless Payton is somehow forced to.

I want to agree with you. But my question would be, what about last year. How do you explain the drop off? Payton hand would have been in RR pocket just as much last year as this year.
