After ‘little things’ went wrong this season for Saints, Sean Payton again vows changes will come

The status quo is no longer going to be accepted.

Change, in some shape or form, is coming for the New Orleans Saints. The coaching staff will spend the next several days trying to figure which players will remain with the team. And the coach, Sean Payton, will determine which of his lieutenants will take the sidelines next season.

What and how and when those changes occur is yet to be determined. Payton said he needs time to look over the body of work, do his checks and balances, and then determine the best course of action moving forward. But he did promise changes are going to come.

i trust SP to be the offensive brain trust he is
Not to sure he can be the Boss. he needs to separate himself from the emps and risk not being as liked by them

they are the hired help

I think many here will be surprised. I think major changes are indeed coming.

Coaches, Scouts, Players... even the Saintsations better get it together.

I was about to think the article was another bash the Defense only. I am glad that it transitioned into Drew's INT's and then discipline of the overall team being late for meetings, flights and finally a lack of cohesive party line communications that went awry. The entire organization lost focus. That I put on Payton first to fix.

No, but I seriously wouldn't mind Mike Smith as our Dcoord and even Tice as the oline coach.

And he will cut brees because people say he is getting old and we can bring Brooks back to run the offense.

I dont care what they do they just have to get rid of Corey White, i swear he is somehow to blame for the whole season.

As a defensive coordinator that would be amazing on paper. Payton and Saban would be quite the combo on offense and defense. One can only dream haha.

But mike smith had such a soft team in the falcons...i dont want someone who is the architect behind a team that had a softer defense than our own.

Soft? Every time I watched those A-holes I saw fire and passion from their defense. They may not have played well, but they flew all over the field like madmen.

I'd classify them as inefficient, but certainly not soft. The effort and passion was there, they just had a few too many holes.

While playing us maybe because that was their superbowl. Against other teams? Hell no they were soft and have been for a while.

Me too. I thought they looked tougher and hungrier than us too. But if being honest I thought that in every loss we had. Sometimes even in wins.

Go back to the effort displayed by the 13 - 3 SB winning squad. This years squad showed NOTHING

Disappointed with coaching shake up so far. Hope it continues. It needs to continue. DL coach, ST coach, LB coach.

Still waiting...

Maybe getting rid of the TE and WR coach is what our 32nd ranked defense needed.

8-8 at best unless some of the defensive coaches get tossed.

I don't see how bringing in yet another defensive coaching staff will change anything considering the poor talent we have at many positions on our defense.

Keep Ryan and let the rest go.

These position coaches have consistently been awful, and you could say that 2014 was the most talent we had on defense since the Dome Patrol days. We were the paper champs before the season and did nothing but upgrade positions from 2013 to 2014. Injuries hurt but this coaching staff failed to get these guys ready to play which is why we saw no energy every week.

You'll ask, "why were we successful other years with this staff?". If you look back at every successful year defensively we have had vets here coaching up the players and motivating them. 2014 was the first year without the veteran leadership and it showed because we don't actually have coaches that teach and motivate. Look at the awful situation with SJB and Corey White; both of these players have said no communication is occurring about their future and don't have a clue what they should be working on other than "getting better".

Lastly, when is the last time this staff has developed any players?

We have had 5 different defensive coordinators but kept the same positional coaching staff for the last 10 years, how does that make sense?

Halo 01-19-2015 03:15 PM

Re: After ‘little things’ went wrong this season for Saints, Sean Payton again vows changes will come

You're right, it doesn't make sense. We don't develop players because our defense is a band-aid patchwork year after year. Always seems to be a last minute emergency to plug leaky holes in a porous defense so we grab free agents and veterans to stop them up.

You are correct in that we keep the same position coaches and switch the DC. I don't know how that happens and how we expect change if we continue to do that as an organization. Usually a DC comes in and cleans house if they wish and bring in their own coaches.

Unfortunately we've become an AFC team 80's and 90's - all offense and sketchy defense.

WillSaints81 01-19-2015 03:25 PM

Re: After ‘little things’ went wrong this season for Saints, Sean Payton again vows changes will come

^ Well even the offense is struggling now.

The thing is if we don't hire a veteran defensive leader or get position coaches this offseason then I'll know if our offene is good or not. Though because of this past season the defense will probably play better next year anyway to redeem themelves only to falter in 2016.

This defensive staff does develop players. Jordan, Galette, Bush, Greer, Harper, Shanle, Fujita, Casillas, Dunbar, McCray, Hicks have all developed or improved here.

Can anyone point to a player that we couldn't develop that went somewhere else and actually did develop?

Ninkovich, we were trying to make a long snapper out of him before we cut him. He's playing pretty well in New England
