Re: Saints fire WR coach Henry Ellard and TE coach Terry Malone
![]() Good I say. Other than Stills the receiver group has shown a real lack of focus and smarts on the field the last couple of years. Graham hasn't really become the polished TE that he could be. More moves? I think Vitt sticks around for the long haul. He's too big a part of the organization and has much larger responsiblities than just being the LB coach. Bill Johnson is almost certainly gone and the DB coach is already gone. I like Josh Hill a lot, but I wonder how much of his development has to do with Ben Watson and not the coaching. Graham is still a raw player after 5 years in the league. Considering the amount of money we've committed to him that's not a viable result. |

Re: Saints fire WR coach Henry Ellard and TE coach Terry Malone
From reading between the lines over the years it seems like Vitt is a fairly important part of the structure as SP's right hand man or whatever you call it. I don't think he will be fired for that reason. But maybe they promote him upward to full-time asst. coach and hire somebody else just to focus on the LBs. FWIW, I don't think our LBs are coached poorly, they just lack footspeed.

Re: Saints fire 3 assistant coaches
Great. All three of those positions are annually the most disappointing and underachieving since 2009-2010, esp. since Curtis Johnson left. Makes sense.

Re: Saints fire 3 assistant coaches
I'll be elated once Vitt, McMahon, Johnson and talent scouts are shown the door. There are plenty of young, vibrant DE coaches/assistants out there wanting to make a difference (specifically on defense) in N O.

Personnel decision making needs a hard look as well...
Still don't get why Joe Vitt Sr, Greg McMahon, Bret Ingalls, Bill Johnson, Frank Smith, Bryan Young have responsibilities with the team now... |

I don't think blowing the whole thing up is going to work either. I think Vitt is solid and like JV said, he does a lot more for the team than coach LBs. Just like the defense, keep what can grow, cut the rest.

Compartmentalize. As I've posted ad nauseam, name one linebacker drafted, developed and starting by the New Orleans Saints as long as Joe Vitt has been that position's coach... If you want to make him a quality assurance assistant head coach, fine - but get him the f**k away from the players, because he's awful... And whether you're pro Ryan or anti Ryan, there's no question the guy calls up a high ratio of blitzes because the base defensive front is unable to generate a consistent, respectable pass rush against average NFL starters And as that front has mailed it in this season, the coach, Bill Johnson has to answer for it - he's gotten too old and is just doing what he's done for 34 years and it's time he collect his retirement somewhere else... You'll be hard-pressed to find many Saints fans who feel McMahon has had a positive, innovative impact on the special teams... Maybe it was more of Evans and Strief getting older, more injury-proned and the departure of under-rated Center Brian de la Puente affecting that unit's chemistry... Or maybe Aaron Kromer is better than we appreciated, either way the offensive line has totally underwhelmed and struggled mightily in both pass protection and banging it in the short yardage, goal line situations, Brett Ingalls has to go... To get that nasty edge back, it'll take both younger players and a new offensive line coach like 49ers Mike Solari or OU's Bill Bedenbaugh who's shown excellent organizational and development skills in making the Sooner's offensive line among the elite units in their respective field... |
It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...
