Dennis Allen joins Saints’ staff
Posted by Michael David Smith on January 20, 2015, 7:06 AM EST Dennis Allen, who was fired after four games as the Raiders’ head coach last year, has found a new job. Allen will join the Saints’ staff, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. This will be Allen’s second stint as a Saints assistant. He was previously on the Saints’ staff from 2006 to 2010, first coaching the defensive line and then coaching the secondary. Allen will now have to mesh with Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who wasn’t there during Allen’s previous tenure with the Saints. Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
Solid move.

Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
Wonder who is getting let go.
Big step down for Allen though, goes from HC to a position coach... Good move for the Saints, now let's see who walks. |

I don't quite get the love for Allen but it couldn't hurt to have a little extra help with the coaching on the defensive side of the ball.

Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
What position is he coaching?

I assume he'll have a big say in everything, with focus on DB's? |

YES!
After a string of losses, it's nice to have a gain! |

Priority #1 - fix the secondary.
Add a FA CB who can start day one! |

Just shows that Payton/Loomis won't be replacing any of the dead weight on the staff... shame. We have 5 different DCs in the last 10 years but the position coaches don't change, so our defense will continue to be a bottom feeder. |

Didn't you also assume nothing would be done on defense before we hired Dennis Allen? |

Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
Also, Schefty is reporting through the ole Tweeter feed that former GM Jeff Ireland will take over college scouting.
I think the Dennis Allen hire is a safety net for if Ryan has another terrible season. The Saints will then promote Allen to DC. Just a hunch though. Nothing to back that up. |
Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
Unsure about Fisher,Dolphins draft picks sketchy under him

Allen was hired to put pressure on Rob Ryan, not to replace any position coaches (Not my words, just restating what the NOLA article says). To me that means we will have yet another DC with the same staff under him and expect different results... There is no way you can justify having the same positional coaching staff for 10 years but going through 6 DC in that time due to poor performance. Allen's hire to this position tells me (my opinion) that they are putting more pressure on Rob and refuse to give him the help he really needs-- new position coaches. Our defense will continue to be inconsistent as long as Vitt and Johnson are around. |

Rob Ryan must be ecstatic. lol
I start to feel sorry for the big guy. |
Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
I hope that Ireland's interview technique improved. Guy asked Dez Bryant if his mother was a whore.
|
Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
Jeff Ireland was one of the worst GM's in the league... I get that he has ties to Sean Payton but that's a tough hire to feel good about.
|
Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
Why wouldn't you be excited? We added another proven, trusted mind to the coaching staff.
Look at teams like New England and Baltimore and Seattle who have former HC's and proven coaches. We need that. Besides, we've lost a LOT of talent to other teams over the years. |

Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
Well to be fair, we need to look at the drafts of the KC Chiefs from 1997-2000 as he was in the same position then as the Saints are looking to hire him in now.
2000 1.21 WR Sylvester Morris 2.23 DB William Bartee 3.23 DB Greg Wesley 4.21 RB Frank Moreau 5.24 WR Dante' Hall 5.33 DB Pat Dennis 6.22 OL Darnell Alford 7.02 WR Desmond Kitchings 1999 2.23 RB Mike Cloud 4.13 WR Larry Parker 1998 3.27 RB Rashaan Shehee 4.28 LB Greg Favors 5.05 DB Robert Williams 6.28 DL Derrick Ransom 7.27 DB Eric Warfield 1997 1.13 TE Tony Gonzalez 2.17 WR Kevin Lockett 4.14 QB Pat Barnes 5.33 RB June Henley 6.32 WR Isaac Byrd |
Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
Well if Rob has a bad season Allen can blame him. If Allen takes over and has a bad season, who do you blame? Payton? 2 more bad seasons and Brees window is done.2 more bad seasons Payton is done. Maybe 2 more seasons Vitt retires because no other team would hire his sorry a$$ and Johnson follows in his footsteps. 6 DC's in 10 years that is truely amazing without position coach changes. Vitt and Johnson must be keeping some deep dark secrets to keep their jobs.

Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
When I read that we hired Ireland I was excited about it......not so much after a little research. However, Ireland is supposed to have an eye for talent.
I don't care that they didn't succeed in upper management. They are back to doing what they do well. They both had success doing the job that got them noticed around the NFL. Which is why someone else wanted them and gave them a chance. |

Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
Miami was always an elite qb and decent rb away from being a contending team. Ireland could not scout offense but we really don't need him for much of that. Defense he is good at. Miami has had a good secondary that just has not been well coached at times or play on a team they feel confident in. Also SL stadium is not a great place to play and the dolphins struggled at home but on the road they knew how to play, they even gave Denver problems this past season. Of coure Ireland was no longer with them but those were his player mostly.

Re: Dennis Allen Rejoins Saints
On second thought I hope we do not hire him or people need to protest outside saints HQs to get Loomis out. On the variety board, we're already getting ridiculed for this hiring.

Priority 1: a pocket for Drew to sit back in have a lunch and survey the field with out anyone getting a hand on him.
after that go defense all you want defense is not going to win us anything! make it serviceable and let Drew do the rest |
