no one fears a saints move? a woman with no training taking over the club?

i fear the worse in this one.

so i am bit concern by the overall attitude about this.

seen it happen before. one court case with all the promises in the world to stay and with in three years the Minnesota North stars were split in two. one brother started the Dallas Stars. The other brother started san jose sharks.

nothing the fans could do to stop it. no money and no court could not stop it.

Rita has been working for the Saints since H.S. She knows the business. She's lacking the formal schooling but she learned it through many years of OJT. She is capable.

Her demeanor on the other hand, a documented rift in the organization is what brought it to this impasse. This is shaping into a feud between women more than one between a father and daughter. Benson already stated family members would be taken care of so it's not about money. This is a power grab for all the loot. The wife wants it. Rita wants it. Benson's loyalty is to his wife. That's how I see it. Benson has more children but their names are not even in the mix and Rita was I believe adopted. His loyalty is to his wife and that's a tough pill to swallow for her, having put in a lot of work for the team and business during some very rough years.

This article adds an interesting element. Apparently, Benson may not legally be able to remove the Saints and Pelicans from the trusts. It definitely seems he has under valued them.

If I understand, he can pull the assets out of the trust, but he has to replace them with assets of equal value. How much are the Saints worth?

I'm confused by some of the comments that seem to be directed negatively at Rita. As soon as I heard the news of the "transfer" this morning, it instantly screamed power play in my head. Why do women marry much older, rich men? For their looks, or hearts? Of course not.

This might only qualify as a conspiracy theory at the moment, but it sure seems like this is a plan that has been long in the works, and somebody is being blackmaled or downright brain washed, for this sudden flip of power to happen. You just don't do that to your family. Tom doesn't owe his wife either of these franchises. She's been in the family for 10 years and doesn't know crap about anything. Meanwhile the one's who have been promised their rights have been putting in work since long before this latest wife came around.

So I'm glad Rita is suing them. Why shouldn't she? I don't want this women to move our team. Given the controversy that is sure to ensue, it's not difficult to imagine her trying to get out of dodge.

As I remember it, after Katrina, it was Tom Benson who wanted to move the team to San Antonio claiming the new facilities on Airline drive were un-usable when they were not even touched by the storm. His new bride, Gayle, encouraged the move because that's where she was from and wanted the team there. Internally it was Rita Leblanc Benson, Tom's granddaughter, who started to resist and change the mind of her grandfather. Eventually it was Tagliabue who put his foot down for the sake of decency. After Katrina and the Saints return, Rita earned herself an executive spot and a face of the organization.

Tom says ownership needs to shift to Gayle to keep the team in New Orleans long term. My question is, when recently has the long term location of the team been in question? Why is that even mentioned? Sounds like boy who cried wolf and a PR move. Gayle gets the team and it can move at anytime. No one has to fulfill a "promise".

They make a very good case. A lot of it is "information and belief", but it figures to be accurate one could reasonably assume based on what they can honestly prove has been going on.

And it sure as heck isn't just Rita. This is the daughter and everyone else, and it sure seems like there's been a pattern.

Listen, I don't think Tom has 1.7 billion he can use to replace the value of the Pelicans and Saints in the trust. No way on Earth he seriously devalues the total of the two so much with a straight face assuming he's thinking clearly. That's how I see it - will be interested to see if we get to read his formal (legal) response.

I think that we need to start a B&G collection to raise enough money to buy the club. It is not a stretch that the result of all this fighting is the dissolution of the trust and the exposure of the entire estate to federal and state(s) taxes. As was pointed out, Benson may be wealthy, but he is likely not to have $5 billion in assets that will protect the $1.7 billion value ascribed to the two franchises.

We need to be prepared. Halo? Set up the B&G trust!

<sigh> ... it's always the fans who suffer, :neutral:. Lotta' good points on the trusts being irrevocable. That's probably why they set 'em up in the first place ... Mr. Benson wouldn't be the first old guy to do something peculiar, just sayin'.

We may have Rita and Tags to thank for bringing the Saints back to New Orleans but we have Payton & Brees to thank for KEEPING the Saints in New Orleans.

Winning cures all and now that things are funky, my gut tells me Benson is back to his old tricks. I'd almost forgotten how sneaky the old days were....

The worse thing that can happen will be split ownership between the two.
Leaves the team in limbo with two parties pulling it in opposite directions.
I may not be from the city but if this leads to the team to leave New Orleans I'm done.

Its the one aspect of US sports I can't stand,the team belongs to the fans nobody else

This is the second darkest time in team history. Could you imagine working in the front office right now with no real leadership having to watch your back at all times. Nobody of quality is going to want to work for this organization in this climate to include FA's even after it's sorted out. If the wife runs the show it's going to unravel rather quickly. All the recent statements by Benson she released, how is that even possible if he's losing his mental facilities. Impossible.

I have never even thought of the Saints not being in New Orleans. All of my entire life from birth til now all I know is the New Orlean Saints, I could never believe anything else,ever. As a fan there were many, many years that were horrid, even winning 1 game was a highlight in my life at times, then there were the hopeful middle of the pack years to keep your hopes up at possibly winning a banner to hang, now even though the last 3 seasons have kind of stunk we have a Superbowl to add to all the banners that now hang in the dome. The Saints have a rich tradition and an insane amount of fans that live and breath the team good or bad and taking that away would really hurt to the core. I don't want to feel like I lost a piece of my heart.

Wasn't Rita just sent away from the team a couple of years ago for her poor behavior and attitude towards the staff? I thought they made her go thru some sort of manners/professional training before she could come back.

Seems to me if that was the case it appears the training didn't take.

If Mickey is there who cares about the token position of leader? In fact I'd want an owner who doesn't think they know everything about the biz and leaves it to the professionals (aka: Loomis).

If Payton and Loomis bail if the team is actually turned over to Gayle then that will be the determining factor as to the actual problem. If Rita is gone and they're seemingly happier than it was probably the right call by Tom.

If the trust is so irrevocable, why not sue on those grounds? Why try and prove incompetence which is extremely difficult. I think there is more to this story than we've been told.

Removed items in a trust have to be replaced with items of similar value. That didn't happen. Items were replaced with items of lesser value which is illegal. That's the impasse and call to war from my understanding.
