Just let Drew play out his contract and give Ryan a legitimate chance, everyone should be pleasantly surprised who's been on our roster...

Petty wouldn't be a bad choice. It would probably take him 2 or 3 years to develop, which is about what Brees has left.

I wouldn't burn an early pick on him, but if he's there late why not?

We would have to use a rd 3 on him which I would be in favor of. Saw the kid play in person. He is a beast and would be ready in 2 years.

Nothing wrong with having competition for Ryan G either.

Agree. Later pick? Sure.

Petty could be one of those best kept secret kind of guys who can transition to the NFL and be very successful. It is not always the top drafted QBs who make the best NFL QBs. I would like to see us give him a chance.

There are a few young guns coming out in the draft this year and next year. Payton will have his eye on Drew's replacement for at least a year before he drafts the future of this franchise.

*Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor*
Height: 6-2. Weight: 230.*
40 Time: 4.87.*
Projected Round (2015): 4-6.*

3/14/15:*WalterFootball.com knows that multiple NFL teams viewPetty as a third-day prospect*despite the hype from some draft pundits. He had a solid Combine performance.*

The view of league contacts was justified by Petty's performance in 2014. His accuracy was inconsistent, and he missed a lot of wide-open receivers who any NFL quarterback has to connect with. To help himself, Petty finished the year well against Michigan State, including a number of accurate deep balls. Petty needed a strong week at the Senior Bowl, but that didn't happen. He was average and looks like a backup for the NFL rather than a developmental starter.*

Petty completed 63 percent of his passes in 2014 for 3,855 yards with 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He had six rushing touchdowns. Petty needs to improve in his pocket passing and accuracy.*

8/27/14:*2013 was an impressive debut season for Petty as Baylor's starting quarterback. The dual-threat quarterback could definitely improve as a pocket passer now that he has gained a year of experience. Petty completed 62 percent of his passes last year for 4,200 yards with 32 touchdowns and three interceptions. He ran for 339 yards and 14 touchdowns as well. Petty backed up Robert Griffin III and Nick Florence for three seasons .*
Weaknesses

Scouts concerned he could be product of Baylor's one-read system. Has tendency to spray the ball against zone coverage on intermediate routes. Can extend plays but won't make many plays downfield once he extends. Mistakes happen when forced to come off of first read. Struggles when defenders are near his feet. Yards per attempt declined in 2014 and screens were a much higher percentage of his passes. Struggles to pull himself from the doldrums when having a poor game. Nose of the ball dives when he doesn't drive throws with his lower body. Must learn to read defenses and get through his progressions when he joins the NFL.

Sources Tell Us

"My grade is a projection based on what I think he can do rather than what he did this year. I think his back was a bigger problem for him than people realize." -- AFC North area scout*

"Offenses that ask quarterbacks to look to the sidelines so coaches can make the pre-snap reads will never crank out NFL ready quarterbacks. Those quarterbacks all need redshirt years in the league." -- AFC West area scout*

"After watching the tape, talking to both guys and seeing them work out, I have Petty ahead as my third quarterback." -- AFC quarterbacks coach

Also add in his back issue (similar to Romo).

The best thing for the Saints would be a team wanting to jump up to take him at the end of the first round and we mive back 5/6 places and gain a third.

I don't think his back issue is going to be a problem. But lets face it strong heart and leadership is going to be needed to hold off the teams in this division with better athleticism and better receivers. Petty can probably adjust I'm sure. And I thought he's going third round or fourth? However, I'm hearing eagles could get him possibly if not Mariota. Baylor's system is not ours. I hope Payton has his own replacement in mind that can continue the saints success on offense the way he does it before he leaves with Brees.

I'd like that. I believe we could get him with our second 5th rounder or even in the 6th.

Re: Should we draft and develop QB Bryce Petty

Petty has raced up the boards and will likely be at worst a 3rd rounder and I can see him going in the 2nd now.
