In 2013 Junior and Jordan both benefited from people like Akiem Hicks getting a massive push up the middle, it means that the QB cannot step up and fall right into the outside guys laps

2014 - Akiem Hicks was very underwhelming, I saw Jordan especially beat the tackle around the outside but the QB just stepped up into a totally clean pocket due to there being no push from the inside guys

Get that inside sorted and Jordan should be back to his best.

This is why I wouldn't mind moving up to get Shelton... If by some miracle he falls to 13 we better take the guy. Shelton would be a game-changer for us.

Agreed. Gotta believe an improved secondary will help

It want help in the run game if the front 7 get gashed like last season. A stud NT is needed up front., with stud ILB'ers to shut the run down and put pressure on the qb. then the secondary can improve.

In theory they should feed off each other... A secondary who can cover just a second or two longer gives the front 7 that added extra time hence the term "coverage" sack...

Likewise if the front 7 seven are getting decent pressure on the QB, can make a struggling secondary appear better than they actually are...

Agree about that in the passing game but it still leaves the run game which we were eaten alive last season. I don't think we have shut down CB's Lewis is close but our #2 and #3 needs to be as effective to make that work.

Hicks can only do so much when the NT does not require dbl teams. it all starts in the middle and works it way outward. Our NT was handled all season long by just one blocker. that is a huge issue.

Jr does not require double teams so that leaves everyone to block hicks on that side of the line.

get NT solved and the rest will fall into line. till then the front 3 of the saints will be a bunch of push overs.

Someone like Shelton would be a dream at 13 and then to add an ILB like Anthony or McKinney in the 2nd round would already make that front 7 a whole lot better.

Then again if the real Cam Jordan is the 2014 version, we'll overpay.

He isn't in the same universe as JJ Watt. He's an average to slight above average DE but not great and certainly not even close to a JJ Watt talent. He has ONE above average year out of 4! He is a solid DE but isn't a superstar talent.

We only line up in a 3-4 about 33% of the time so we really need to stop analyzing these players as they relate to our "base" defense. Jordan and Hicks hardly ever line up as 5 techniques.

I do agree with that statement, now my question is why get 3-4 players that excel in a 3-4 and put them in a 4-3 or 4-3 players that don't excell in a 3-4. Why not get players that fit the scheme and beef it up from there. Recent examples, Byrd and Ellerby 3-4 players at their best. Hawthorn 3-4. Jordan 4-3 it makes our D weak.
