Mickey Loomis: Saints open to drafting a quarterback

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis insisted last month that Drew Brees won't be traded, but don't rule out New Orleans drafting another signal-caller.

"You're always looking to get a young quarterback in the program," Loomis told reporters Wednesday during the team's pre-draft press conference, per Kristian Garic of WWL Radio. "If the opportunity presents (itself), we might take another one."

Loomis emphasized that the club likes backup Ryan Griffin and sees no end in sight for 36-year-old Brees. Still, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport was told by several sources in November that the Saints "will draft a quarterback highly this year," adding that "they wish they had done this in previous years."

We can't help but wonder if Sean Payton wanted to draft Jimmy Garoppolo, New England's young passer who shined at Eastern Illinois, the coach's alma matter.

While the Saints are one of two teams armed with a pair of first-rounders -- the type of ammunition required to make a move for Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota -- we don't expect New Orleans to attempt such antics. More realistically, Baylor's Bryce Petty, UCLA's Brett Hundley or Oregon State's Sean Mannion sit out there as tangible options starting in Round 2.

We drafted one in 2010 when it was even less of a need. No reason to think Loomis won't draft one if he wants to.

Mid-round I can see. 1st or 2nd round I just can't see it.

Also it makes me think that Sean has every intention of staying on board after Brees retires.

He said long ago that he'll leave the Saints in good shape when he inevitably moves on. I imagine that means he'll make sure we have a good QB who's ready to lead the team.

Re: Smokescreen

I have concerns over Petty.
RGIII was a cant miss QB who was far better in college than Petty and he has struggle mightily with the pro game. Great in his first year when everyone had a one year shot with the read option system QBs.

Rather than go there why not look at keeping the pick this year. Under a different coach and a great QB for a year possibly two there are players that could possibly be good QBs.

The Bucs don't want Glennon (Payton liked him) offer a future pick post draft. Or aa they have next to nothing at safety offer Rafael Bush, expiring contract and cheap for the Bucs.

The same for EJ Manuel and even Geno Smith. Both were never succeeding in the offense with the Bills or Jets. Give them a line and a year under Payton/Brees and you are likely to have a QB no worse than Dalton/Cutler/Flacco. Doesn't sound great but gey a strong defense and run game and you can ein championship as Ravens proved.
jeanpierre likes this.

"Two receivers to the left, Garcon to the right. Manning in the shotgun, puts Collie in motion. Looks in his direction...it's picked off! It's picked off! It's Tracy Porter again! He's runnin' free! He's gonna go all the way!

Re: Mickey Loomis: Saints open to drafting a quarterback

I'd rather Winston and all of his baggage over Hundley. I don't believe in Winston, at all, but Hundley is crap. There is no defense in the pac 12 and the guy was still all over the place. Maddeningly inconsistent.

The mention of Mannion almost made me throw up in my mouth. I would compare taking any Oregon State QB to Taking someone from a Mike Leach system. Not the same systems, but both like to throw the ball a TON and put up numbers, which rarely result in anything but mediocre team success. And their QB's never make it in the NFL.

I feel pretty similar to that with Bryce Petty in that Baylor System, but IF we were to draft a QB he would have the best physical tools to work with after Winston. I don't believe in any of these guys, to be honest.

The kid from East Carolina, Shane Carden, might be a guy to take a look at late in the draft, unless he goes higher than I expect to someone else. His game reminds me of Petty, but without the hype, which is why I think we could get him in the late rounds and just kick the tires and see what he's got.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.
