Wanted: best coach available - NFL

Sporting News, The, Feb 9, 2004 by Dan Pompei

If everything were equal, I would prefer to hire a head coach who can deal with the offense because points are what make the sun come up in Paul Tagliabue's world.

But trying to fill a head coaching position with someone who has an offensive background is like going into the first round of the draft with a bead on one position. Closing your eyes to all the other possibilities always is dangerous--and potentially calamitous.

The king of NFL coaches today is the Patriots' Bill Belichick, who has a defensive mind. His opponent in the Super Bowl, the Panthers' John Fox, was raised on the same side of the line of scrimmage. Dallas' Bill Parcells, another defensive guy, can get his teams to react like no one else. Tennessee's Jeff Fisher is a titan, probably the best coach year in and year out. Yet another defensive mind.

Over the past five years, however, 56 percent of the playoff coaches have had offensive backgrounds. The Super Bowl is the ultimate barometer. In the 1970s, the defensive minds of Don Shula, Tom Landry and Chuck Noll dominated the big game. In recent history, coaches with offensive histories have been more successful. Seven of the past nine Super Bowls have been won by offensive head coaches. Of the past 48 Super Bowl coaches, only 27 percent have had defensive backgrounds.

Just an interesting article on coaching I found.

That is interesting, since Haslett is knows as a DEFENSIVE coach. Pretty much says we will hardly ever win anything with him. Thanks for telling us something we already figured out.
