Saints make new coaching postion and hire.......
The New Orleans Saints have added a proven, experienced defensive strategist to Coach Jim Haslett's staff with the hiring of Willy Robinson as Senior Assistant/Defense and another sharp mind to the staff with the hiring of Johnny Roland as Running Backs Coach, the club announced today.
Robinson, the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers in 2004, will be involved in all aspects of the weekly game-plan for the defense and will lend his expertise to the entire unit in this newly-created position. In 2004, Robinson led a young defense in San Francisco after a four-year stint (2000-03) as defensive backs coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Under Robinson, Pittsburgh's secondary forged a reputation as one of the NFL's hardest-hitting and most aggressive units. The Steelers went to the playoffs twice in that span - including the AFC Championship in 2001 - and had 66 interceptions. "We were looking for a coach who could bring a fresh perspective and a wealth of experience to our defense," said Haslett. "Willy gives us another set of eyes and he has been involved with defensive game-planning in the NFL for almost a decade. His contributions to our staff will be as an advisor for every position group, particularly the secondary, and as a top assistant to coordinator Rick Venturi." A nine-year NFL coaching veteran, Robinson served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Oregon State in 1999, with OSU featuring the top-ranked defense in the Pac-10. Prior to joining the Beavers' staff, Robinson spent the previous four years (1995-98) as the secondary coach for the Seattle Seahawks. While there, he tutored two All-Pro performers in CB Shawn Springs and S Darryl Williams. In 1994, Robinson was the secondary coach at perennial collegiate powerhouse Miami, a position he held after a long stint in various capacities at Fresno State. While with the Bulldogs, he coached the secondary (1980-86), the outside linebackers (1987-89) and returned to the secondary in 1990 along with tutoring the special teams. In 1988, he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator and took those responsibilities over himself in 1992. Born Feb. 10, 1956, Robinson attended Fresno State, where he played defensive back http://www.neworleanssaints.com/news...articleid=1279 |
