Saints make new coaching postion and hire.......

The New Orleans Saints have added a proven, experienced defensive strategist to Coach Jim Haslett's staff with the hiring of Willy Robinson as Senior Assistant/Defense and another sharp mind to the staff with the hiring of Johnny Roland as Running Backs Coach, the club announced today.

Robinson, the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers in 2004, will be involved in all aspects of the weekly game-plan for the defense and will lend his expertise to the entire unit in this newly-created position.

In 2004, Robinson led a young defense in San Francisco after a four-year stint (2000-03) as defensive backs coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Under Robinson, Pittsburgh's secondary forged a reputation as one of the NFL's hardest-hitting and most aggressive units. The Steelers went to the playoffs twice in that span - including the AFC Championship in 2001 - and had 66 interceptions.

"We were looking for a coach who could bring a fresh perspective and a wealth of experience to our defense," said Haslett. "Willy gives us another set of eyes and he has been involved with defensive game-planning in the NFL for almost a decade. His contributions to our staff will be as an advisor for every position group, particularly the secondary, and as a top assistant to coordinator Rick Venturi."

A nine-year NFL coaching veteran, Robinson served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Oregon State in 1999, with OSU featuring the top-ranked defense in the Pac-10. Prior to joining the Beavers' staff, Robinson spent the previous four years (1995-98) as the secondary coach for the Seattle Seahawks. While there, he tutored two All-Pro performers in CB Shawn Springs and S Darryl Williams.

In 1994, Robinson was the secondary coach at perennial collegiate powerhouse Miami, a position he held after a long stint in various capacities at Fresno State. While with the Bulldogs, he coached the secondary (1980-86), the outside linebackers (1987-89) and returned to the secondary in 1990 along with tutoring the special teams. In 1988, he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator and took those responsibilities over himself in 1992.

Born Feb. 10, 1956, Robinson attended Fresno State, where he played defensive back

Well, I don\'t know what to make of this.

Making new coaching positions? It could help I suppose.

But, then again, I\'m not really excited about this at all.

Willy Robinson only has one years experience as a defensive coordinator. And that was last year with the 49\'ers. And the 49\'ers defense finished 26th in total defense.

What\'s there to be excited about?

Venturi is still the DC.

I really don\'t see the move as a BIG step. But you never know.

You just never know. Which scares the hell out of me!!

Goodness how much more can we take of this. I didn\'t like the idea of bringing Haslett back, but I started to think hey let\'s give the guy another chance. But keeping Venturi as DC, it\'s time to fire the staff and bring in new blood. Fans can only take so much.

One more thing... if you watched one game of the 49ers last year, then you\'d know I COULD COMPLETE A PASS ON THEM. I mean injuries didn\'t help the cause for them, but they couldn\'t cover a freaking turtle.

Here\'s a little something I found on Willie Robinson. FWIW.

Here\'s something Ed Bouchette wrote in Black & Gold Insider yesterday that caught my attention:

Just got off the phone with a writer from San Francisco. He told me that 49ers defensive coordinator Willy Robinson was a joke this year, screwed up their defense, didn\'t know what he was doing. If Robinson had not taken that job, he might have been the Steelers defensive coordinator this year and we would not be talking right now.
This is the same Willy Robinson who left the Steelers because he didn\'t like the fact that Cowher would often scream at his coaches during the game (see Kevin Spencer in Cincy this season). Isn\'t yelling a part of football -- and if you don\'t like getting screamed at shouldn\'t you find another line of work? Now I don\'t know if Cowher was seriously considering Robinson to replace Tim Lewis as defensive coordinator, but in this business -- especially if you\'re a player or coach -- you have to expect yelling to be a big part of the job. And I\'m not condoning ranting and raving (not surprisingly, I don\'t like getting ripped a new one at my job, but my job also doesn\'t entail wearing a helmet, tight pants and knocking the crap out of people four hours a day), but in a line of work where seemingly everything is based on physical abilities and adrenaline, yelling is a pretty natural progression. Whatever the case, none of this changes the fact that the 49ers defense was one of the worst in the league and I\'m quite happy with Dick LeBeau (now that I think about it, I don\'t think I\'ve ever seen him yell -- actually, I don\'t know if I\'ve even seen him talk).
