Jahri Evans feels OK about his pay cut
Posted by Michael David Smith on June 27, 2015, 8:50 AM EDT Getty ImagesSaints guard Jahri Evans took a pay cut this offseason, but he’s not angry about it. Evans told ESPN that he understands that it’s just the reality of being a 31-year-old NFL player with a fairly hefty salary that the team may come to you and tell you that if you’re not willing to give back some money, you’re not going to keep your job. “It worked out in the end. You know, it’s part of the business, obviously. And I’m glad to be here,” said Evans. It’s a part of the business that a lot of NFL veterans bristle at: Some say the players’ contracts should be guaranteed, as they are in Major League Baseball. But Evans said he just appreciated that Saints coach Sean Payton was upfront and honest with him about the team’s desire to keep him on the roster, but at a reduced salary. “So that was very great, and I was pleased with that,” Evans said. “I still had two years under contract, so I never saw myself not being here.” The Saints entered this offseason in precarious salary cap shape, and it was well known that major changes would be needed. With Evans, it turned out to be only a minor change: He’ll be making about $500,000 less this year, but he’s still in place on the offensive line in New Orleans. Re: Jahri Evans feels OK about his pay cut
I'm never happy about a player being asked to take a paycut in order to stay on the team, but, if said player's play has dropped off noticeably, then I can see the team approaching them about it and I can also understand the team getting rid of the player if he rejects taking less, but there are other ways to accomplish the same goal, like restructuring. Jahri's p;ay has dropped off the last two years,. but how much of that was due to injury and how much due to age and deteriorating skills? We've shown over the years that we're willing to step up to the plate when a player shows that he's got top skills and should be paid like a top player at their position. Hopefully Jahri comes back strong and healthy this year and shows he'd got another contract in him.

Re: Jahri Evans feels OK about his pay cut
At 31?!? This is Evans last contract with the Saints...
Loomis keeps putting us in binds with some of these contracts... Hopefully Ireland will toughen the front office up and help make smarter moves about who we keep and who goes... Worse move was letting Nicks go and signing Grubbs for just under a mil/year less... Broke up a formidable, dominant interior line... |

Re: Jahri Evans feels OK about his pay cut
If his wrist is better he should be back to form. His back problem doesn't seem to slow him down now. 31 isn't old for someone in the trenches. He is a formidable player when he's healthy.
The problem is injuries usually come more frequently the older you get. At least it's true for rugby players. You never really get over the nagging injuries.......they just bother you less than the new injuries. |
