Re: Study Says Saints Are No. 2 On List of "BandWagon" Fans
I can believe that. Before Payton got here we were pretty much totally irrelevent outside a handful of seasons. Why would anyone from a town that doesnt have an NFL team pick a perrenial loser to be their team of choice? We all watched them and cheered for them no matter what. Because they were ours and attached to the city. We had fun going to games win or lose because they were and are a part of us.
A team all of a sudden gets good and sure a lot of people who dont have an NFL team in their state are going to pick you. Everyone likes to pull for a winner. I dont think the writer meant that WE are bandwagon fans. |

I have loved football and Rocky as far back as I can recall. Rocky is simple. The underdog that had no chance persevered with courage and determination. To pick a favorite team in the NFL as a child, however, was a tougher choice. Being from Alaska, I was force-fed Seattle games. Even as a kid I wondered why the local stations would play the Seahawks games every Sunday when other games were much more appealing. Being over 2000 road miles away from Seattle doesn't make me desire the Seahawks as a home team. I was the youngest child of five. To pick a team I would have to understand why my siblings picked their favorite team. One liked the Hulk and heard of a guy named Czonka that many called the Hulk so he chose the Dolphins as his favorite team. Another watched a freak of nature named Lawrence Taylor play for the Giants in 1981 and decided that the Giants would be his team. But I wanted more than just a player. I wanted to like a team. One Saturday, after Looney Tunes of course, I watched a Football Follies special on t.v. It was an epiphany! I was tired of the Seahawks (I don't recall any kid in school wearing Seahawks gear by the way) and I wasn't about to jump on the Steelers or Cowboys bandwagons like the other kids. The team that had it's own spot on the Football Follies was the team that I would love like a family member from that day on. |
