Saints Should Not Fear A Max Extension for Brees
The money he will likely make will take up a massive amount of cap space, leaving less for the rest of the team to be contstructed.
Of course, the option for the Saints would be to simply let Brees’ contract expire at the end of next season, when Brees would be just a couple of weeks shy of his 38th birthday. Saints Should Not Fear A Max Extension for Brees |

Re: Saints Should Not Fear A Max Extension for Brees
They should not fear the age factor, but here in the real world they have to fear the financial factor. We have 21 million in dead cap money already for 2016. 15% is gone, not coming back (except maybe 1.2 for Gallette).
Brees at $22 million or more plus the dead money would equate to 1/3 of our cap. No way can you put a team, a competitive anyway, on the field like that. |

I agree with you, and even though I don't exactly study the cap and how all the little things work, I don't think it takes a genius to figure out that pushing back cap problems is only temporary patchwork. It doesn't actually solve anything. We can make fun of the Patriots all day long, but teams like that have mastered the art of knowing when to let players walk, and making calculated risks when necessary. Loomis has done a lot of good things, but he tends to go all in, constantly, and sometimes that backfires. |
If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

Re: Saints Should Not Fear A Max Extension for Brees
I do think that trading Graham (a move necessitated by overspending) was the right decision to get the needle moving in the right direction, and the returns on the trade could be valuable assets. So I'm optimistic in the short term about this team. If a few key players we brought in through free agency or the draft like Spiller, Browner, Breaux, Kikaha, and Anthony work out this team could be considerably better.
Also, the return of Byrd and whether or not he can get back to his old form will be huge. I'm less optimistic about the future as these huge contracts pile against each other. |

Will Drew cripple this team to get paid? God, I hope not.

Re: Saints Should Not Fear A Max Extension for Brees
Do none of these hack bloggers know squat about NFL contracts? Brees will be entering the perfect scenario for an extension next year. Not an extension that would cripple the Saints, but one that will free up tons of cap space. Brees is due a $27M+ salary next season. I expect Loomis to work at least a three year extension, possibly four, that would reduce the 2016 cap figure to between $11-12M max with the $27M plus another $25M applied as a signing bonus. Years two through three/four would come in at around $15M with prorated bonus and a token roster bonus of $2M or so.

Re: Saints Should Not Fear A Max Extension for Brees
I personally think he needs to be like P. Manning and take a pay cut. Having to let quality players go to pay for one players greed (Kobe) is a quick way to guarantee no championships. Frankly, unless the Saints shock the world and run the ball to success, I just don't see Brees having a good year without Graham, a declining Colston, talented but young Cooks, and at best some HUGE question marks at WR. So, realistically he may be had for cheaper next year.
