this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; ...Saints are better off switching Donte to CB.... .. he can\'t catch them anyway... but he can get to the ball very quickly... Running backwards and reacting to other players cuts and streaks instead of knowing where he\'s going... I\'m ...

The Saints should go after Patrick Surtain instead of Smoot. Miami gave him permission to seek a trade. Besides he is a Louisiana boy any way right?

I think both these guys are going to cost more than we can afford. Whether there\'s room or not, Benson isn\'t likely to use all of the cap room.
If you\'ve been paying attention the last couple of years, you\'ll understand this. It\'s certainly something that can help the team, but I would be shocked for the org to make such a bold move. Time will tell but don\'t get your hopes up too high. It\'ll only lead to you expressing greater anxiety over this in the future when they both go elsewhere. |

I think the better move here is to resign McKenzie and pick up another CB in the 2nd or 3rd round of the draft. Surtain, Smoot, and Rolle are just going to want too much money for a position that this staff has never being willing to pay.

forget smoot... he\'s all bark, no bite... he\'s not worth the asking price of 14 guaranteed million dollars... i say bring in anthony henry, ken lucas, or woodson from oakland... i doubt any of these three, which seem to be the best corners available in FA, will get any consideration from the saints, due to the fact that the car salesman would rather not spend money than put a good team on the field. another CB, rossum from atlanta, should be brought in as a KR/PR.

from washington post today-
The Redskins have long been at an impasse with Smoot over the size of his signing bonus, and there is a sense among many at Redskins Park that he will depart as a free agent. Gibbs is also optimistic that wide receiver Rod Gardner will be dealt next month when the trading period begins. Gardner\'s agent, Joel Segal, was granted permission to seek deals and spoke with Redskins salary cap manager Eric Schaffer several times recently to report outside interest, Gibbs said. \"There seems to be some interest there, and there should be,\" Gibbs said. \"He\'s a good player.\" Tampa Bay is expected to make a push for Gardner, and Baltimore could as well, with the Redskins likely receiving a mid-round draft pick in return. ----mid round for gardner sounds like a deal. he is a big guy known for making catches in traffic (a nice contrast to current n.o. group). he has only missed 3 games going into his fifth season. at 28 he could be ready for bigtime after being stuck in the woeful skins offense. good replacement for pathon or (gulp) horn if his demands are too high. |

DE John Abraham
N.Y. Jets Couldn\'t arrive at contract extension, tag coming. RB Shaun Alexander Seattle TD leader would consider franchise tag a \"stab in the back.\" CB Gary Baxter Baltimore Solid (and unheralded) member of Ravens defense might like moving to SF with Nolan. LB Kendrell Bell Pittsburgh Stalwart playmaker on No. 1-ranked defense. QB Drew Brees San Diego Chargers prepared to franchise him and keep Philip Rivers. WR Plaxico Burress Pittsburgh Has played second fiddle to Hines Ward for 5 years. QB Matt Hasselbeck Seattle Seahawks need 3 franchise tags. RB Edgerrin James Indianapolis A priority re-signing, but Colts don\'t have much cap room. T Jonas Jennings Buffalo Not among elite tackles, but a solid 2nd-tier guy. RB Rudi Johnson Cincinnati No way Marvin Lewis lets this gem get away. T Walter Jones Seattle Doubt Seahawks will franchise him for a 4th straight year. CB Ty Law New England Has issues with Bill Belichick and due around $11 million. WR Muhsin Muhammad Carolina No receiver was better in 2nd half of season. T Orlando Pace St. Louis 3-time franchise player has unreasonable Postons as agents, wants 10 million. DT Corey Simon Philadelphia Eagles not going over the top to resign him LB Julian Peterson San Francisco Represented by Postons and coming off severe knee injury. WR Jerry Porter Oakland Already talk of reunion with Gruden, but Bucs have little room. DB Dwight Smith Tampa Bay Can play any position in secondary but wants cornerback cash. CB Fred Smoot Washington Reportedly seeking $14 million bonus. RB Anthony Thomas Chicago Forgotten \"A-Train\" was top offensive rookie in \'01. T Tra Thomas Philadelphia Eagles starting to ante up and will need to for this guy. K Mike Vanderjagt Indianapolis He may be an \"idiot kicker,\" but he\'s a great kicker. K Adam Vinatieri New England 2-time Super Bowl hero likely will re-sign with Pats or possibly get tagged. G Keydrick Vincent Pittsburgh Inside plow horse for powerful running game. DT Pat Williams Buffalo Outstanding 320-pound run-stuffer. LB Edgerton Hartwell Baltimore Ravens possible return to 4-3 makes him a star somewhere else out of the shadow of Ray Lewis CB Charles Woodson Oakland Will Porter or malcontent Woodson get tagged? |

didn\'t seem like there was a dearth of cornerbacks the last few years? both veterans and draft classes not so deep. more this year in both than in several past years combined. look at this list-
charles woodson, oak, likely to not be tagged this year ty law, ne, unless he takes a mega pay cut to stay patrick surtain, mia, mia ready to trade fred smoot, wash, wants mega signing bonus gary baxter, balt, good but maybe better as safety ken lucas, sea, solid starter samarai rolle, ten, looking like a cap casulaty andre dyson, ten, if not one then the other gone anthony henry, clev, decent player overlooked on this team allen rossum, atl, labeled cb but a premier kr in the draft i have this list pegged at 1-2 rd quality- antrel rolle, mia pacman jones, wv justin miller, clemson carlos rogers, aub marlin jackson, mich brandon browner, ore st corey webster, lsu quite a list compared to past years. cb doesnt look like the must-need it has been like last spring. as inexperienced as fakhir is tho i wouldnt be disappointed if another top cover guy was added to the fold. |
