Here\'s some more on Arch LKel:
Archie Manning, Quarterback
Ole Miss, 1968-1970
For our list of the 100 Greatest Players of All-Time we put a premium on accomplishments and what that player did to change the game of college football, but we also wanted to highlight the legends of the game. For a running back or quarterback to separate from the rest of the pack, a player needed to win Heismans, national championships and All-America honors. Archibald Elisha Manning III did none of that and yet he still ranks high on our list for being one of the legends of college football. Along with awards and wins, we gave a ton of consideration to players who just plain were college football.
Ole Miss never won a national championship, or even an SEC title, under Manning and went 15-7 in 1969 and 1970. Hardly a great team record, but that doesn\'t diminish the player that Manning was. No one represents the legends or the passion of football in the South, or is what football means down there, more than two personalities; Bear Bryant and Archie Manning. Few inspired the love of a whole state more than Manning as he remains today as Mississippi\'s most popular personality. The speed limit on the Ole Miss campus? 18 miles per hour.
The resurgence and the game: Think the 2001, seven overtime game against Arkansas was a classic? In 1969, Manning played one of the greatest games the college football has ever seen throwing for 436 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 104 yards in the 33-32 loss to Alabama. America caught a glimpse of the junior\'s talents in the first ever prime time national telecast of a college game and people all across the nation were buzzing about the star of the South.. Manning led the Rebels to wins over three top five teams including a 38-0 win over Tennessee.
The all-around player: Manning still holds the Ole Miss record for total career touchdowns (until Eli takes it over) with 56. He ran for 823 yards and threw for 4,753 in his career and scored 14 touchdowns in 1969.
The star crossed NFL star: Not blessed with any talent around him, the No. 2 pick in the 1971 NFL draft spent 14 years with New Orleans, Houston and Minnesota throwing for 125 touchdowns and 173 interceptions playing on miserably bad teams. Few quarterbacks were as beaten and battered as Manning was behind some of the worst offensive lines the NFL has ever seen. Manning\'s still the New Orleans career leader in total yards and touchdown passes (115).
Honors:
College Football Hall of Fame - 1989
3rd in Heisman Trophy - 1970
4th in Heisman Trophy - 1969
No. 18 Ole Miss jersey retired
Ole Miss Team of the Century
All-SEC - 1969, 1970
Walter Camp Award - 1969
NFL Most Valuable Player - 1978
UPI Offensive Player of the Year - 1969
Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame - 1989
And in 14 game seasons. Like you said LKel, with no rules protecting the QBs back then either. Wow. But like you said, Deuce may change that if, like Danno said, he comes in in better shape and avoids the injuries. Gonna be kinda hard to beat out Arch though as the best Saints number one pick ever, and one of our best players ever, period.
