The only player on the field who has to be perfect. Is the Kicker.

no, wrong.
The kicker can mess up outside 40 yards, and in bad conditions.
He is not, however, allowed to miss extra points, in indoor stadiums.

High snap.

McCown did a great job.

Kicker was thrown off and probably should have made the kick but I'm not firing him over that one play.

I don't suspect he WILL get fired over that one miss. But I can't excuse him on it. I noticed the snap was high, too, but as you said McCown did do a great job in bringing it down. Once that's done, you gotta make the extra point. I can understand if he's winding up for a 50 yarder and he gets his timing thrown off, but from 33 yards away there isn't much to think about. You just want to make sure you get it high enough where it can't be blocked. But he actually kicked it right towards where the rush was coming from.

You really need to watch how a kicker goes through the process of kicking.
It is all timing. He nods his head to the holder to call for the ball and the countdown begins. Kickers don't look at the snap they just put their head down and approach the ball to kick it. It's not like they wait to see it placed before they start the process. This is why I didn't fault Hocker on his misses. The snaps have been inconsistent all year long and it makes a hell of a difference. Instead of bringing in kickers, I think it's time to bring in long snappers.

Unless the snap is way too high that the holder can't get it down in time which is exactly what happened. ;)

This is true. My son was a holder and it was all timing over placement and "string" position. The whole play is a three part process with the snap, the catch and hold, and the kick. Any variance in any of those areas can cause a miss.

I agree.

Payton is probably looked for the 2nd coming of Morten Andersen.

I thought Hocker was going to stay, but he was let go and I assume it was because of the missed game winner vs Dallas.

Right, they don't wait to see the placement before starting. That's the point. It doesn't matter that the snap was high, because McCown got it down in time. But he hesitated anyway, instead of trusting McCown.

Kickers have one job to do. ONE. I'm not gonna shed tears for a guy because things don't always go exactly the way he visualizes it in his mind. Everybody else has to deal with adversity. It's an extra point. He's supposed to be a professional, not some guy's 15 year old kid kicking his first highschool FG. Excuses like that are for those who aren't good enough to make it without one.
