Yup, and increased his guarantee. That is the win/win I mentioned earlier in this thread ... and about five hundred other times over the past three years on this site.

Fans I can understand, but the sports media should know better.
No, I have worked with the sports media (was one) and the average one knows less about finance than your average homeless person. Honestly.

Not really a "hometown discount". It would be just bringing his contract back to the real world. He will extend it by a year and knock it down to 20 million a year. Saves the Saints 10 million and he gets to retire a Saint. No team will trade for Brees at 30 million. It just won't happen. Either he fixes it or the team will be in cap hell again next year. No cutting or trading at this point.

Depends how the O-line gets fixed wheathr Brees is worth whatever he gets or don't get. I would hate to see a high dollar qb. having to run for his life. Brees isn't a spring chicken anymore.

We lose Brees and we can kiss being competitive bye bye for several years. He is still a better option than anyone else out there or anyone else in the next couple of years drafts. He has plenty left in the tank. Get a good receiver in the draft and be on the lookout for a replacement that can come in in a year or two and sit for a year before taking over. Brees can still get it done at an elite level for two or three more years if we can get him another receiver to throw to and some help up front.
No sense in getting rid of a franchise QB just because it feels like time for a change from some fans.

Extend his contract like the above poster said.

We can afford a defense. We have more money tied up in defense than we do in offense if you exclude Brees. Loomis got us the money to build a very good defense. The scouting and coaching staff just made poor choices on who to spend that money on.

100%. Brees isn't the problem. He is performing. It's the wasted money on bad defensive choices like Gallete, Browner and Byrd. Re-structuring Brees lets him put more money in the bank immediately and extends that cap hit over 2-3 more years to make it respectable and allow us a rebuild. Anyone wanting to see Grayson right now and Brees traded is a crack pot in my opinion. This can be fixed with the right draft and some shrewd FA signings.

If he would restructure over 5 years and play say 2 more years and the retire. What would happen then? Would there be a cap hit?

Here's a very simple example...

He’s due 20 million this season (He’s already been paid the original 10 million in bonus)

Lets say his market value is 20 million

We re-sign him to a 5 year deal, with 25 million in bonus money, its really a 3 year deal..
His cap hits are now…

2016 – 5 million + 10 (cap hit 15 million)
2017 – 5 million + 10 (cap hit 15 million)
2018 – 5 million + 10 (cap hit 15 million)

At this point he has pocketed 55 million from the Saints.

2019 – 5 million + 10 (cap hit 15 million, if cut it costs us 10 million in dead money)
2020 – 5 million + 10 (cap hit 15 million, if cut it costs us 5 million in dead money)

Why won't Ian Rappaport ever report us getting rid of McMahon, Bill Johnson, Vitt or #39??
