Re: Brandon Browner just posted his release on Twitter

It had to happen. If you removed his stats from the Saints defense lats year -- penalty yards, first downs given up, drives kept alive, and other big-play stats -- once you took those out of the defense and replaced them with stats from virtually ANY mediocre player, the Saints defense would have been middle of the pack and quite respectable. He literally was that bad. Browner single-handedly kept opposing teams in the game, by giving up first downs and crucial penalties, that would create opportunities, and usually lead to 1 or 2 scoring drives per game for the other team.

This is good because now I can actually believe in the team and be positive again. I hate to be so harsh, but it had gotten so bad that I just couldn't believe in the team -- you just knew that nothing good was going to happen when he was out there.

I'll take the $5mm in dead money over the money we're paying him to lose all those football games for us. Shouldve released him last year. Good riddance to the the Thug of Mug.

The New Orleans Saints appear to have parted ways with veteran cornerback Brandon Browner, who strugged through his one and only season with the team.

Browner posted a series of messages on social media Friday morning thanking New Orleans and referring to his tenure in the past tense.

"100 (percent) appreciate the opportunity the Saints gave me," he wrote.

If the Saints have told Browner about his impending release, the official move wouldn't come until at least Monday, one day after the Super Bowl.

Browner, 31, signed a three-year deal with the Saints last March after spending one season with the New England Patriots. By at least one measure, he was the league's worst cornerback in 2015 and his well-known physical style also led him to set a new NFL record for penalties.

Even so, teammates and coaches relentlessly praised Browner, who was named a defensive captain.

"You want guys that every day they come in here, they're willing to compete and put the team first. Brandon Browner epitomizes that," said defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.

As his struggles mounted, Browner had run-ins with local media and eventually stopped talking altogether. But he took the high road in a goodbye message posted on social media, saying, "I truly did love the city, really wanted to do well for the 504."

The Saints will realize little salary cap savings by cutting Browner. His 2016 base salary of $2.75 million is fully guaranteed and the team still must account for $2.6 million of his original signing bonus against the cap.

However, the Saints would save $750,000 by releasing him before a roster bonus took effect on March 17.

Even as he struggled, Browner played every game and 95 percent of the snaps alongside rookie Delvin Breaux for an injury-depleted Saints secondary.

Without Browner, the Saints would have six cornerbacks under contract for 2016, including presumed starters Breaux and Keenan Lewis. The others are recent draft picks Damian Swann and P.J. Williams and twin brothers Brian Dixon and Brandon Dixon.

"Two receivers to the left, Garcon to the right. Manning in the shotgun, puts Collie in motion. Looks in his direction...it's picked off! It's picked off! It's Tracy Porter again! He's runnin' free! He's gonna go all the way!

Say what you want about him as a player,he's gone out the right way and kept it classy unlike a linebacker not worth mentioning his name.

Shame it didnt work out

Its 5ml in dead money but 750k saved on the cap. Every penny will count this year. If Lewis can stay fit we have a good 1-2 and hopefully the two rookies can stay fit and we look pretty good with whoever is drafted/FA or UDFA brought in this year

I think the front office decided it was cheaper to draft an average/below average corner late in the draft than to pay Browner the full salary to be well below average. We can all agree he wasn't going to see the field either way.
