There was no sense of urgency from the New Orleans Saints or quarterback Drew Brees to work out a new contract extension before free agency kicked off last week -- even though it could open up another $10 million or so in salary-cap space.
That could change now that New Orleans has pretty much used up all of its cap space during the past week. But my guess is that the Saints have avoided pressing the issue so they're not acting out of desperation or giving Brees any more leverage than he already has with one year remaining on his current contract. Another possible reason for the delay: Brees' market value has continued to soar in the past two weeks. read more |

No sense in extending him at this point, let him play out his last year and see what happens.

It also makes perfect sense financially as it will free up most probably $15 or more million in cap this season which can be used for more immediate moves or rolled forward (yes, this can be done) to increase the team's available cap for 2017. In addition, by letting Brees play out his contract it would move ALL the leverage to Brees. Currently Brees has stated that he wants to retire as a Saint and is more than willing to restructure/extend. I would be shocked if a deal has not already been hammered out between Brees and the Saints and the final details based upon what the Saints' cap needs entail are the only items remaining before becoming official. Now THAT make perfect sense. |

Let him play out the contract and see how his health holds up throughout the season...
If he shows fatigue or decline as the season moves on, then what no one wants to speak of is then upon us... There's no need to extend now as there's no advantage gained in free agency... You still have two, three other players who can re-work their contracts or be released to gain room for a FA DT and the first round pick... Let him hit FA market next season; let the market set the price; we'll have the room to compete with anyone for him... ...and we won't have to extend him with guaranteed money when he's no longer playing and be strapped like we are with dead money this season... |
It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

The alternative is to gamble that he will continue playing up to the level of one of the top 5-8 QB's in the league and extend him three years for an average closer to $18M per year.
I would say the smart money would be on his remaining one of the premier QB's in the league. |
