Bottom of the Barrel: Saints Off Season Moves Grade Poorly

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I'd give it a C-minus at this point in time. That's based mainly on what they failed to do instead of what they actually did. Getting Fleener (overpay), Fairley (1-year stop gap), and Lauranaitis could end up as good moves. ...

I'd give it a C-minus at this point in time. That's based mainly on what they failed to do instead of what they actually did. Getting Fleener (overpay), Fairley (1-year stop gap), and Lauranaitis could end up as good moves. But not addressing this team's most serious holes (DE, DT, Safety, OG) is a head scratcher. Loomis has crippled this franchise with a series of terrible FA signings, unwise extensions, and poor results in the draft. Leading the league in dead money is not a good thing. Let's hope we do better in the 2016 draft.

We did address DT and why do you think we have a serious hole at safety?

And as Guido stated...

Moving Kikaha to DE, where he played and excelled at in college, and adding Fairley to the inside will prove to be a solid improvement. Lauriniatis gives the Saints a true field general in the middle and allows Anthony to concentrate solely on doing his job.

Fairley was the top rated DT in free agency. That isn't a splash? Lauriniatis was the top rated MLB and the second rated ILB in the FA market. Not a splash? Fleener was the second rated TE in the FA market behind Antonio Gates and everyone knew Gates was re-upping with SD. Not a splash? Bigger splashes did not exist at the positions needed by the Saints.

I'm not sold on Fairley... coming off back-to-back sub-par years I'm not getting too excited yet. Maybe he'll prove me wrong and come out hungry because he's on a one-year deal, but it looks like a pretty underwhelming move IMO and doesn't upgrade the unit.

Loomis & co. gave Byrd a monster contract that he's not even come close to living up to (not only has he been hurt, for a guy billed as a ballhawk, he's got one INT to his name in black and gold). Our cap numbers are so out of whack again, that we let Bush leave town, and we didn't have enough to sign anybody else. So yeah, I'm worried that we've got Byrd who is injury prone and virtually no depth.

Perhaps I am, but the buck stops with the GM, he's ultimately responsible for how the roster looks. And if his main job is to make the money work, he gets an F- from me the last few seasons for how poorly he's done that job. Again, having the most dead money in the league is squarely on Loomis.

Again, I hope they prove me wrong, but I just don't see a lot of upgrades to our roster from last year.

Seriously? We've upgraded several spots, and the draft isn't here yet. Our LBs are much improved even if we draft any.
