Drew Brees applies deadline to talks with Saints on a new deal

The Saints and quarterback Drew Brees still haven’t worked out a new deal that reduces his salary-cap number for 2016 below $30 million. There’s now an apparent deadline for getting a deal done.

“I don’t like to talk about contracts during the season,” Brees said Wednesday, via the Associated Press. “If you remember in 2011, where it began to drag into the season, three weeks in I was like, ‘I don’t want to deal with it anymore. I want to focus on football, focus on the season.’ That has always been my approach. That’ll be my approach again. There’s a deal to be done now, and if it doesn’t get done now, it’ll be a different deal to get done at the end of the year.”

Agreed Shrimp. I think it's time we just said if you want to stay here please take a pay cut or thanks for your service. New Orleans has done more for Drew than he could ever do for us. We gave him a chance when no one else would so anything past that is because of New Orleans baby!

I know this won't be a popular opinion, but I agree. Brees will be 38y/o at the end of the season. You don't pay a 38y/o QB 26y/o QB money.

Its not like we are going to have to pay the guy for the next 4 years. They can cut him anytime they want after the contract is signed if he loses too much. It will most likely be a front loaded contract anyway so the cap hit probably wont be to bad if they do cut him.
There just isnt a better option in the league right now or coming out of college in the next year or two. Hes got two more years at a high level. We need to ride that train as long as we can. We get rid of him too early and it will be years before we are contenders again.
New QBs come with new schemes, new protection, and a different pace. It is rarely a plug and play when it comes to QB. Unless they are elite.

You cant blame him for trying to get the best contract for himself. This is his last go round and he knows it. Yea we see him making so many millions a year but we dont know what his financial situation he is. For all we know his Jimmy Johns venture is putting him in the hole a couple million a year. I dont care if you make 100 million a year, if your losses in other business ventures are 99,999,999 you arent making squat.

I realize the Bernie Sanders mindset is appealing but you cant blame a guy for trying to make as much money as he can. Agents make you sick because they try to get every dollar they can?? Thats their freaking job. I wonder how many of you would tell your boss you dont want a raise "because its best for the company" when your time comes.

I don't blame him for trying to get as much as he can. I said that, to begin with.

I fail to see how any players money mismanagement is a concern for any front office or the fans. Deuce lost everything. I hate it for the guy but he listened to the wrong people. Like so many other players.

Bernie Sanders has nothing to do with anything. I realize it's an agents job to get as much as they can. I guess I shouldn't say I don't like lawyers or politicians; my God, I might get executed for giving a random opinion.

I wonder how many of you would tell your boss you dont want a raise "because its best for the company" when your time comes.

Many people do. How many times have you worked when you were off, or missed a birthday, anniversary, or cut a vacation short because you were needed at work? It is generally the same thing.

Look, my point was the point of view from a fan that is tired long, drawn out, beating of a dead horse, bickering back and forth of a contract. That's all. I'm not satisfied with .500 or lower seasons. I'm not bashing Drew, but damn, get a deal done and sign the thing.
Not attacking you Dude. I just want it done, like everyone else does.

Re: Drew Brees applies deadline to talks with Saints on a new deal

I understand taking care of yourself. I really do. However, at some point you have to reach enough money. He has provided his children and his children's children a solid life, financially. This is why agent's make me sick. Agent's always draw this crap out. Trying to get every dollar they can get. Drew really needs to be his own man and walk in and say, "Hey; what is best for y'all and for me to still get paid? Ok! and sign the damn paper.". Sorry, but that's JMHO.

Drew if you feel like it's not moving along as fast as you'd hope; then maybe; this time, it might be you and your agent that are prolonging this deal.

This organization has solidified your career. Guaranteed you a first ballot HoF induction. Your Jacket size and Bronze bust are already ordered. National commercials. The list goes on and on. Sign the deal and stop jerking off.

"We are number one. All others are number two, or lower."

Let's hope this off-season drama doesn't spill into the season and some agreement is made. The drama is almost as bad as players being injured before camp - players never seem to deliver 100% when court cases and contracts are on their minds.
