The truth about Saints' free-agency so far..

"Some folks" (like WhoDat ;) ) have stated the Saints aren't going after the right positions.

Well, I just want to clear something up.

The needs, according to most, were right tackle, linebacker, and safety.

So far the Saints have scheduled visists for:

1. OT Fred Miller, scheduled to vist today.
2. OG Jermane Mayberry visited yesterday.

That looks like not only are they trying to sign an offensive tackle but they want to upgrade at offensive guard also.

AND ... the Saints contacted LB Antonio Pierce but he cancelled all visits and talks with all teams because the Giants made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Reported on WWL!

Also, the Saints are trying to work a deal to get safety Donovin Darius from the Jags.

Then they are exploring the possibilites of upgrading other positions such as TE and back-up running back.

If we come away with Fred Miller, Mayberry, and Donovin Darius, I will consider free-agency to be a major success.

We can't get everything. We'll see about LB!

Interesting on Mayberry. I read he was injured 11 games in 2003. We all know he was injured again last year. He is 31. How is this gonna help again? Two straight years of injuriies, over 30, and we may ask him to switch positions to RT? :casstet:

Shocker. 12-4 Bill? Win the division? The Saints could sign my mother and tell you she\'s the next coming at... what position do we need least?... DE, and you\'d consider FA a success.

Well what a lot of people seem to forget is that the Saints aren\'t in that great of shape cap wise to be signing 20 FA\'s. Some of the signings that people would like to see we would have to get rid of likes of Deuce, Horn and a number of others.

Which supports the idea that signing an OG , TE, or RB is a mistake, unless the Saints have already found solutions to more pressing needs. It will be hard for the team to sign effective players at 2 LB positions, DT, S, and OT and work out contracts with Deuce and Horn, and whomever else. Why reduce that pool of money that already looks to be stretched thin by signing a player at a position that is of minimal need?

RB definitely could be addressed during the draft. I\'m sure we could draft someone better than Ron Dayne in the 5th round or later, and he would be cheaper too. So the RB thing boggles the mind.
