Not to be a downer guys, but with us having the 4th toughest schedule next season, only taking 1 D-Lineman in the draft and 0, LB's, I just don't see that much improvement from the D this year. I've been rewatching games from last year, and watching our D is like having a root canal. It's really painful to watch. You're expecting them to allow any team to move up and down the field at will and only not do that by making a mistake of their own that would keep them from doing so, cause this Saints D can't stop a stiff breeze. Now, with only 1 quality D-Lineman and the signing of Laurinitus, you now think that all of a sudden this D is now gonna be formidable? Really? I mean, I live, breathe, and bleed Black and Gold, but even I don't see that happening. That would literally take a miracle to happen so since there haven't been any miracles in quite a long time, I just don't see it happening. Not only is the D, one injury away from being the worst D in the league again, the O isn't much better off. I think we all need to calm down just a bit and realize just what this team did in the offseason which wasn't much, and see the team for what it is without all the glitz, hope and dreams for this year and see what this team really is and that's a team that's still rebuilding and is a year and more likely two away from being even good. At least good enough to contend for a playoff berth. If you think we'll make the playoffs this year, I'm afraid you're setting yourself up for a major disappointment. I'm just going to look for some improvement from our 2nd year players and hope we get some kind of complementary play from our newest crop of rookies. If we do better than 6-10 or 7-9, that will just be gravy.

The part about them "realizing their own stupidity," good luck with that! Don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen, no matter how the Saints finish.

As long as the O-line is good enough for Brees step up to throw and stout enough to get Ingram and hightower good holes I can see 6-7 games there. We'll only go now as far as this D will carry us. Brees won that many with terrible, terrible D's. Come on good ole' boys. I'm waiting.

This is true.
only taking 1 D-Lineman in the draft and 0, LB's, I just don't see that much improvement from the D this year.
Those two don't really jibe. First off the days of only improving through the draft are long gone. Both veteran and rookie free agents give opportunities to upgrade without having to draft talent. Laurinaitis and Fairley are significant upgrades at their positions.

Honestly, there are only about 20 drafted rookies that come in and make immediate impacts. So just because the draft wasn't the route doesn't mean that there isn't improvement.

The makeup of this Saints organization doesn't really require formidable. What it is does require is not to be historically horrible. In 3 of the last 4 years, the defense was exactly that, historically horrible. But in 2013, really out of nowhere, the defense was top 5 in many categories. A turnaround in a single year.

Do not rewatch the defense from last year. Here's why:

1. Browner is gone.
2. Ryan is gone.
3. A rookie is no longer orchestrating the show.
4. (Finger crossed) Much less of a M.A.S.H unit with the terrible spate of injuries.

It is amazing the runaround when you simply have the correct number of people on the field, in the proper position, ready to do their job. Last season the phrase "Keystone Kops" definitely comes to mind. So just burn the tape and move on.
Really? I mean, I live, breathe, and bleed Black and Gold, but even I don't see that happening. I can't share your pessimism. I'm not drinking the Kool-Aid. But in the Payton era, each season where the defense held the opposition to under 350 points for the season, the team has won more than 10 games and made the playoffs. That's just shy of 22 PPG. Now it's a lift (last year 474 total, 29+ PPG). But 22 PPG was 14th last year. It isn't impossible.

So I watch and wait. I just hope to see a defense that doesn't give up 45 TD passes, 54 1st downs by penalty, and 29 PPG. Anything will be better than that.

Not completely here. It may even be worth it to watch the epic meltdown at the other board though.
