Saints sign Dwight Smith!

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; When did Craft leave? I thought we had an offer on the table for him. Has he signed somewhere else? No, he hasn\'t signed anywhere yet. He\'s still a possibility, same as Gleason....

Bellamy did play FS for us. That was the year that the ball kept going over the heads of him and Sammy. He\'s dropped off too much. I think Smith will be playing FS, just as reports have suggested.

I too think we are really thin at CB. Craft and Brown are both UFAs. Here is what scout.com is saying about them:

Brown: NOTHING. However, he is both taller and heavier that D. Smith. He also didn\'t look too bad in coverage in the couple of games I could see.

Craft:
Jason Craft UFA Saints – The Saints coveted Craft for a long time and traded for him prior to last year’s draft. While possessing good speed, Craft lacks good size and will get beat time to time by bigger or more physical receivers. The team was hoping that he would win a starting role but he wasn’t able to and was mainly a dime or nickel corner for the Saints.
Of course, as I noted yesterday, Dyson, Smoot, Rolle, and Law are all still available... slobber...

On the other hand, so is... Fred Weary...

Or:
Ray Buchanan cannot be counted on to be a starter quality player in the league due to his advancing age and slipping athletic ability. No longer possessing the speed and quickness to be a cornerback on a fulltime basis, Buchanan displayed his versatility playing at safety and corner in the 2004 season. Known as a player that is mentally prepared and will get physical, Buchanan can still play the game at the professional level, but no longer has the recovery speed and quick reaction tools he utilized during the prime of his career.
Sounds like a guy ready to play our nickle spot...

saintswhodi, you keep inserting Davis in our lineup. There\'s about a 1 in 30 or so chance that the Saints will really draft him. So right now it comes down to this: Do you feel more comfortable with
McCarthy-Bellamy-Smith-Brown or with
McCarthy-Bellamy-Mitchell-Smith?

Leave him at the safety position where he has better chances to get the interceptions. If we don\'t get another decent CB you may move him to nickle back in 3rd-down-and-long situations with Mitchell at FS.

Brown isn\'t listed cause he is not a UFA as far as I know. And how does everyone miss this:

But like I said, Davis can play FS then.

And leave Bellamy at strong
Is that not what we are gonna do anyway? I am confused as to how noone seems to see this when they respond. Bellamy is our SS and everyone poo-poos the move to FS, fine. So he stays at SS, where he is, and Davis plays FS while Smith plays corner for a year. Or is this too far out of an idea?

I\'m happy that we addressed an area of need, even though its not LB. But I have a question. All I\'ve been hearing about Smith is that he is versatile (can play SS, FS, or CB), he is fast, he is a big hitter, and he makes plays. This sounds like the same things we heard about Tebucky when we got him. I haven\'t heard the first person say, \"This guy can really tackle well.\" or \"He has great fundamentals and never misses a tackle.\"

Anybody?

no cloning, I think you meant McKenzie? Anyway, the IDEA was floated with the assumption we will draft Davis. We very well may not. But since it is an idea based on an assumption, why would I assume we woudn\'t draft him? It is an IDEA, that\'s it. It is not a fact of what the Saints are gonna do. It was something I would like to see happen, not the 10 commandments of our future moves. If we dont\' draft Davis, then the idea is nothing cause he is the main basis for the thought. It is also based on the fact I am more comfortable with Smith at CB thananyone outside MM. But again, it is not a fact, just a thought.

Sweet. I was starting to worry about depth! I say lets get Dyson anyway!

McKenzie - Smith - Bellamy - Dyson

Damn!

Or Mitchell instead of Bellamy if he really is back to 100% this year...

Or we sign T. Davis in the first...

McKenzie - Smith - Davis - Dyson

Yikes!

Of course, the three guys in front of them are...

Bockwoldt - Watson - Allen

Snif.
