People try to inflate the value of players all the time, but when you are UNDER CONTRACT, you have no right to complain. Nobody owes you retroactively if you out play your deal. Just keep playing and you'll make good on the next deal. Instead he couldn't stay healthy. So that doesn't make him look good.

However, this seems really early to release him. Would it REALLY be so detrimental to just wait it out till final cuts, instead of cutting him now and letting bubba bo bob brain, or whoever, get knocked around at the bottom of the roster for a couple of more weeks instead of Lewis?

That's my only issue. It's not like he was going to cost PJ Williams or Delvin Breaux a roster spot. I can only guess that there might have been some off the field problems with his attitude or something. But that isn't confirmed, so I'm still just a little surprised.

Exactly. Keeping him on the roster wouldn't have hurt. Only helped us.

Keeping him on the roster hurts because it means one less healthy player available to the team.

I believe that it's really just as simple as Williams is healthy and playing reasonably well while Lewis is unavailable. Payton has said as much when asked about the release.

As I've said, it's likely that the Saints did Lewis a favor. It's tough to catch on when you're a late cut.

Ok i have managed oe paragraph yet and its already rubbish

Shouldn't have let lance Moore go.
As much as i loved watching the guy it was time to go as his failing everywhere have shown. His place was taken pretty much by Brandon Cooks and Willie Snead who are both youger, faster and biggest of all cheaper.

Sproles was a cost cutting exercise,Harper went again far over payed and Vacarro was expected to play better than he has at times. Malcolm Jenkins, yeah that looks a mistake but he never showed what he has for the Eagles in a Saints jersey.

Jimmy Graham was a masterstroke, the guys body is failing him, even before his latest injury. Money off the books and Anthony and Unger.

this all makes sense ^ except for the timing. Cuts to 75 aren't until next week, and then 20 more guys will 4 days later. So Lewis had another 8 days and a game to show he was ready, or at least improving.
Even injured, you'd think he was a better option than TE #5, or OLB #11

As I said, he was never going to take a roster spot From PJ or Breaux, or any other top talent on this team. He doesn't have to compete with their roster spot, at this time. There are other players at different positions who are never going to make this team. I think Lewis has done enough when healthy to earn the right to try to get healthy, at least up until final cuts.

If he can't get healthy and get on the field this preseason for the Saints, then he wouldn't for anyone else, either. So with that in mind, I don't agree that they did him any favors.

Pretty much exactly my only issue with it. Lewis may never have gotten on the field, but keeping guys who are just warm bodies, for the sake of having warm bodies doesn't outweigh the importance of trying to get Lewis healthy, knowing what he's capable of. Not in my mind anyway.

The way they've wasted A LOT of Mr. Benson's money is a bigger crime. Not many players who leave the Saints go on to bigger and better things.
