To be honest, nothing would have been standing in the way of making the same deal had the Saints gotten the opportunity and felt they needed him after an interview and physical.

after the Kruger deal we have less than $1.5 mill
Sitton's cap hit will be 6. That's a lot of playing around with Brees' contract- his base is only $19 mill, so a renegotiated contract would need to bring that down to 14 mill, not including signing bonus

In a renegotiation/extension they can convert his 2016 base to bonus and prorate. His renegotiated base could be as low as veteran minimum. His 2016 cap hit could be as low as $8 mill ($30 mill proration plus vet min) depending upon the structure. It wouldn't have to be that low, but it illustrates how much latitude exists.
