What about Andre Dyson?
welcome also k man
he may not be the precise prescription to cure the ills of the team but at this point most here would probably be happy to see any player that might have a positive impact. some ho-hum writer in virginia was summing up the fee agent activity thusfar and had a concise summary for the saints (bold mine)- LOSERS Arizona: The Cards\' surplus cap space netted only quarterback Kurt Warner and o-lineman Oliver Ross, who would have been a reserve in Pittsburgh. They also claimed running back Larry Ned off waivers, but released him two days later after he was arrested at a Phoenix airport security checkpoint for attempting to steal a person\'s laptop. New Orleans: The Saints had the league\'s worst defense last year. Their response? One addition, the signing of safety Dwight Smith, and they could be trying to trade defensive end Darren Howard. A plus for quarterback Aaron Brooks: They did sign offensive tackle Jermane Mayberry from Philadelphia. |

Well I don\'t totally agree but we did have the worst defense for the first 12 weeks but is it really one addition. I think Mike McKenzie is still like a new edition and D. Smith is a good pick-up. If we can at least defend the air then we can call more plays tailored to stopping the run and play closer to the LOS.
Remember no team scored more than 18 pts on us in the four victories. [Edited on 9/3/2005 by kannon315] |

Sorry to be a pessimist, bu also remember that ATL didn\'t even bother fielding their first stringers in one of those games..... so effectivey, we only one three game. We\'ll never know if they\'d have beaten ATL full on.
Sorry to be such a pessimist, but I can\'t forget that. Really, of those last four games, the only one that really wow\'ed me was Carolina. That one was full on, a very pleasant surprise. |

i call it realism not pessimism lord. how so many people and apparrently the organization itself can put so much weight into those miraculous four wins is beyond me. for the first 12 games they weren\'t just bad. they were one of the worst defenses in the history of the league. if just counting the last four weeks they were about #5 in total d if i remember. get this... #5 for 25%, one quarter of the season and they still totaled dead last in d, 32nd. the carolina finale was a real legit win but not a season. edging out the 2nd string falcons? (i think mora was helping his old bud jim) beating the 5-8 bucs? the erratic cowboys? get real, it could have just as easily been a 5-11 or 6-10 year more realistically. loomis talks like we just need a little tinkering on d and we are off to the races. one free agent and one impact rookie on defense isnt enough to get out of the bottom third ranking on defense imo. and that is needed to seriously contend.

I understand fully what you are saying. The Saints defense last year was horrible and i\'m all about improvment but football is a game of mismatches. With a good secondary you can challenge teams by placing 8 in the box. With shutdown corners you can mix between a blitz and other coverages. With Tesucky Jones and Giveaway points Bellamy in the def. backfield you can\'t blitz, you can\'t stack the line, and when the Saints tried the got beat deep(ex. Tampa Game TE over the middle). All I\'m saying is the Saints have made it obvious so far that a LB is not in the immediate FA plans so why not sure up the secondary. As far as the last four games they beat NFL teams not 2nd rate players or backups in my opinion, before they couldn\'t beat winless teams.

For anyone who thinks that the D is ok or close to being ok, all you have to look back to is the Minnesota game.
I WAS THERE. I saw the debacle firsthand. What was it....602 yards given up? |

That\'s getting old. 7-0 after the first quarter against Minny, but our offense did have a red zone turnover that led to points. Damn that defense. Can\'t stop anyone.
Anyway, kannon, the play in question

With a good secondary our LB would not feel the need to have to help cover recievers. Remember my original post was to take a look at Dyson! I know just as well as everyone else that the Saints D needs help!

But, you said it yourself, through the first 12-games we were one of the worst defenses in NFL HISTORY. Over the last 4-games, it improved DRAMTICALLY. Now, in now way can anyone say it compares with the Ravens\' defense. But, no one can deny what they saw with their own eyes, either. I\'ve pointed out many times how the Bucs were rolling on offense until they met up with us. Also, the Panthers were the hottest team in the NFL when we played them. Had our defense not have improved DRAMATICALLY, those 2 teams would have rolled over our defense. Much like the Cardnials did earlier in the year. So, while someone might want to discredit the imrprovement by the defense; it\'s very unfair not to acknowledge the improvement. The improvement was REAL. But, only time will tell if it carries over into this upcoming season. |
