Re: Saints Ain’t “Smashmouth” — But They Must Be More Balanced to Win
We can't run the ball more because our O-line is decent at pass blocking and sub par at run blocking. Do we want to run it and go three and out?

Re: Saints Ain’t “Smashmouth” — But They Must Be More Balanced to Win
I wish we could run the ball more, we just can't.
It would keep our defense off the field to help recoup. Payton has been talking about balance since 2011 ish. Kind of like the smoker that quit so much he quit quitting. He ought to just stop saying it. I didn't even ask him to lie to me, Again. The o-line spends so much time on their heels, they never really learned to like putting it in drive and going forward. I can't even imagine a post game speech where Payton is spitting fire because there were only 12 running plays for 62 yards. What would that sound like? Everyone giggling all over the locker room...Payton trying to convince anybody "I'm serious man! Dam'it!" Now people are rolling on the floor. A running mindset is tragically missing and has been for years. The pseudo screen/bubble version of the run sorely misses the personnel to be effective. Throwing for +400 has only yielded sub .500 results. We have lost more +400 yard passing games than we have won. It's a shame. I haven't check, but I would "almost" guarantee the opposite is true for +100 yard rushing games. There is just something about running the rock that makes a man feel like a man. |

Re: Saints Ain’t “Smashmouth” — But They Must Be More Balanced to Win
Fact: We are a better team when we can run the ball.
You control the game/flow by running the ball. Not only that but you keep your Defense off the field. I think people like Carm calling the plays than Payton. The problem with that is that Carm is PASS HAPPY. Yeah we run up a score but then our D is on the field way more and drained before the 4th quarter. BALANCED is what we need although I haven't seen much from our Oline that they can run block effectively. So damn if you do damned if you don't I guess. |

It makes perfect sense.
You run the ball effective they come up and stack the box to stop the run and then you play action off that creating miss matches and Drew is even more effective as a passer. If teams only have to play the pass they will get... sacks - turnovers |
