Ellerbe's past injury history is irrelevant. He played most of the season and was effective doing so. His salary is literally couch change in NFL dollars. If he want a big contract in 2018, that's another story. But for now he's staying put.

McCown is speculation. It's clear Payton, Carmichael, and Brees trust the guy and no one so far has risen to that level of trust. Let's not forget that he lit up the Panthers in 2015 in his last start. That's a backup's job.

Streif currently has no replacement on the roster. It's unclear if Peat can play the position. Plus even at 34 he was a top 5 right tackle in the league last year. While clearly the Saints need to be looking for his replacement, I don't think this is a year too late situation. Strief made it clear he wanted to retire a Saint. So dollars are not a problem here.

Anthony's coach was fired. It'll cost more to cut the guy than to keep him. So what sense does it make to cut the guy without giving the new LB coach as shot at coaching him up?

So that leaves Byrd. He's the only one that makes financial sense to cut. It's taken nearly three years to finally see the potential that was invested. The Saints are already $8 million in for Byrd in 2017 either in salary or dead money. The only question is he worth the extra $4 million to keep him on the roster?

Perfectly said.

Strief- top 15 OT, and a bargain at $5.1 --cut him to save $2 mill? No. As in no-brainer
Byrd- $11.7 mill to stay, $8 mill if he goes. Stay
McCown- when we have someone better, sure, cut him. $1.5 mill is nothing., but if we cut him pre June 1, it only costs 250,000
Ellerbe- hit is $3.2, which is a gamble. Cut him today and it costs you only $700,000. Gotta figure the new LB coach will want to see him first
Anthony- $2.1 to keep, $3.1 to cut. another no-brainer

We can look at his film, medical files and contract to determine his future in New Orleans. We don't really need time to evaluate him. We know what he brings to the table every time he steps on the field. Ellerbe is an impact player when he is available. The problem is getting him on the field where his skills shine. I definitely want to keep him this year and see if the injury bug is behind him. If we keep him then he can continue being a force at the weak side where we have literally no one else to play the part.

Of these selections Strief is the only real no brainer. Because of his strength and longevity he's a keeper whether he is starting or as a role/back up player. He wants to retire a Saint and I want him to get his wish.

Cutting Anthony would be stupid. At least let him show off enough in camp so we can get something for him. I just have a feeling he's going to come back strong. Is he just a complete idiot or something? I see him the type of player to go to a division opponent and be a pain in our ass for years.

Ellerbe is a great pass rusher for his position. I'm intrigued to see him rushing when our DE's are also bringing the heat.

Not one of these should happen. We will have 30 million in cap space. No reason to cut and take a hit when any one of those could be a valuable backup.

I doubt any of them will be. The article is just another click bait.
