Saints Interviewing Jim Tomsula - YES!!!

Saints plan to interview ex-49ers coach Jim Tomsula for defensive line opening.

Outside of coordinators, assistant head coach hires in the NFL rarely qualify as splash moves, but one man the New Orleans Saints plan to interview would qualify

The Saints intend to interview Jim Tomsula, the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 2015, for the defensive line coach opening with the Saints, according to a source.

Sporting News reported Friday the Saints interviewed Tomsula earlier this week, but the source said the interview hasn't yet happened.

Prior to his promotion, Tomsula coached the 49ers' defensive line from 2007-14, a unit that was among the best in the NFL at times during that stretch. Tomsula, 48, did not coach in 2016.

We asked for it, and now we have it.

According to Alex Marvez of the Sporting News, former 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula has interviewed with the Saints for their vacant defensive line coaching gig.

The Saints are looking for someone to replace Bill Johnson, who was fired as part of a staff shakeup there. Johnson landed with the Rams.

Tomsula went 5-11 in his one season as 49ers head coach in 2015, and was defensive line coach there for the eight years prior.

He was out of football last year, living off the $14 million the 49ers paid him for one season of work.

I wonder if he knows any other good coaches?

He built a fantastic D line for the 49ers from 2010-2013, let's hope he can bring that success here.

That could be a real interesting addition if it works out.

Re: Saints Interviewing Jim Tomsula - YES!!!

Tomsula developed several defensive linemen for the 49ers, including three undrafted free agents, Tony Jerod-Eddie, Ian Williams and Mike Purcell, who were all contributors for the team last season.

He was also the defensive line coach when the team drafted defensive tackle Ricky Jean-Francois, who has stuck around for seven seasons with the 49ers, Indianapolis and Washington, in the seventh round.

It works because to quote a certain sports talk show: "Jim Tomsula sounds like a monster a creole grandma comes up with to keep kids quiet. Keep quiet or that Jim Tomsula is comin out tha swamp!"

Why? He's an OK DL coach. Probably aren't 32 better.

You can't make Chicken Salad outta Chicken ****.

It probably comes down to teacher versus schemer. Some can scheme vets well, some can develop youngsters. I'm guessing very few can do both.

A bigger shock will come when Vitt does and the show stopper will come IF McMahon ever does. (I'm thinkin' Div III college for him.)

I was sold with the word"developed". Thats something that I can't remember ever with the good ole boys. Going to get interesting if we hire him, he has a talent being able to build a front line and evaluate players.

Elite hiring candidate & exceptional positional coach. Jim had some scary good D lines with the 49ers.

Smash mouth City. Fingers crossed he signs with New Orleans.

Think he's looking to be Co D-Coordinater as well? Wonder if he'd settle for just being DL coach.

We have had better luck developing DL talent, so some of that had to be Johnson. The problem was depth because we took too many injuries there over the last 3 years.

If he did not sit out last year then I would say that would be a demand for DC would be in the cards for him. I think settling on a short term gig might be in the cards.

Allowed to concentrate solely on the DL would change ours dramatically. Good pickup that I believe will happen.

Re: Saints Interviewing Jim Tomsula - YES!!!

I am really beginning to understand just how much a good position coach can help elevate the entire team. I am excited about the D-line potential with Jordan, Rankins, Fairley, Davison and Onyemata. This is a talented and athletic group that can get after the QB and stop the run. I actually thought Bill Johnson did an adequate job of coaching up Onyemata and Davison last season but it was too little too late.

Re: Saints Interviewing Jim Tomsula - YES!!!

That begs the question what kind of coach do we need a teacher or a schemer

Crusader 01-21-2017 06:06 PM

Re: Saints Interviewing Jim Tomsula - YES!!!

I'd say we need a teacher more than anything. The schemes looks alright but technique could be better a lot of times.

Look at the impact Coach Glenn had for the DB, we had a very depleted secondary and he got production out of UDFAs and journeymen. I think a good teacher as D-line coach could have a similar impact.

+1. Davison, Onyemata, Rankins, in addition to our new draft class (assuming we go D line/LB) could learn a lot from Jim . Remember the likes of Justin Smith, Aldon Smith, Bowman etc? All talented players but improved significantly under the tutelage of Tomsula ;).

Good post. We have young players that need teaching first, Onyemata showed good promise for a 5th round pick, with some help on his fundamentals he could turn into a very good player.

Re: Saints Interviewing Jim Tomsula - YES!!!

Onyemata is a physical specimen. Jordan described him as "strong as an ox", and thats saying something when an NFL player says it about another, he could do big things if coached well.

Davidson was a 5th rounder also. He has well outplayed his draft status. I still think drafting another NT to go along with Davidson, Ony., and Rankins would be a great move with Tumsula as D line coach. Not only would we be one of the youngest middles, it wouldn't cost us an arm and a leg in free agency. It would allow us to go after key players on the D side. Our cb's are made of glass and I like the thought if we have to pay a good FA cb. that we don't have to shell out a kings ranson on the D line.

As usual we'll get the unwanted coaches, just like when we could have had Romeo Crennel or Wade Phillips, we let them sign elsewhere and chose Rob Ryan....
