— I won’t focus on Oklahoma’s Joe Mixon at this time, but another player with serious (though not domestic violence in nature) character concerns is Michigan State’s Malik McDowell. According to one person close to the program, McDowell has been a substantial motivational and attitude problem for his coaching staff since his freshman year. He has cussed out teammates and coaches on the practice field, and he left the team prematurely with an “injury” late in the season. He often went off-script from the defensive game plan, and while he looked fantastic in isolation, it did him no favors with the coaching staff and some of his teammates.

One general manager told this person his team would pay McDowell's signing bonus if a team in his division drafted him in the first round. That last part is quite a hot take, but it’s notable in the sense that not only is McDowell concerning for teams, but teams are expecting him to be more of a cancer than a benefit. He reminds of Sheldon Richardson coming out of Missouri, though Richardson’s teammate issues weren’t nearly as concerning.
