I have no problem rewarding him with a nice contract with some incentives.

We need him.

a raise sure. Incentives for the big bucks. bump the signing bounce.

but $6-$9 mill with a huge cap hit for a player with a history like his is silly.

Define "nice". Because there's a ton of risk this franchise can't afford to take when it comes to overpaying free agents. Aside from recent blunders by our front office the DT position is not as dire as it has been made to seem without Fairley.

This is true. A Brandon Williams or Jonathan Hankins would easily make Fairley expendable.

After the dust settles, I think the Giants will end up letting JPP walk in efforts to re sign the younger Hankins. As for Williams, his hopes are to stay in Baltimore (has two young kids in school & is very active w/charity work in the community). I could see him taking a "hometown discount" simply because he loves the area & at this stage of his career his family is priority #1 as opposed to making more money in FA.

Saints FO better have a solid back up plan B & C if Fairley walks.

Fairley knows the system and works well in it. I want to keep him at a reasonable price. But he has earned and will probably get paid more than we can afford to pay him as a rotational player. I like Rankins, Onyamata and Davison a lot. We have a new technician teaching the D-line and the future looks bright with or without Fairley........it just looks even brighter with him I believe.

Correct. Without him we are weaker. We can find a lessor replacement and save a few bucks, but unlike other free agent signings gone bad, we know for a fact that he can produce in our system. I would rather spend more money on that than take a chance at another Browner or Byrd.

I agree, the odds are Haskins will be retained and JPP will test the open market. If not Hankins jumps up on my want list.

Rankins and Haskins would be a great youth move

We are weaker without him only if we don't address the position following his departure

Right now our D line is possibly 1, maybe 2 players away from being complete. Without Fairley, we're possibly one injury away from being short handed ... again. 9M sounds about right.

Not disagreeing with your opinion, in fact, it's mine too...

But if you take PFF or ther grading services, Fairley's play was among the best - so he's earned a big check...

Thing is, he may now have rep of a year-to-year player; now that could work to the Saints favour...

I would go 6 million not a penny more. If he wants more I would go after Bennie Logan. Save the expensive signing for a DE. maybe Ingram at olb and sheard at de. You grab Logan and sheard and we have a defensive front that could be the best in the league.
