Re: 2017 NFL Combine - Saints Prospects

The running backs class is considered to be one of the best in years and nearly all disappointed with very pedestrian 40yd dash times with a couple of exceptions...

Keep an eye on North Carolina's T.J. Logan, who could be drafted as a change-of-pace running back; he ran the best 40 time for the RB group...

Coastal Carolina's DeAngelo Houston, was also among the fastest, similar in build to MI, shifty runner with great speed to the corner should move up my board...

Houston was also one of the few RBs to do more than 20 reps on the bench press; he's moving up my board...

Very interested in the medicals of UL-Lafayette RB Elijah McGuire, who was injured his senior season, hasn't been the same runner and may still be bothered with his foot injury...

Tarik Cohen, the Human Joystick and is compared to Darren Sproles, also had one of the better timed sprints...

Rounding out the 40 yd performers was Utah's Joe Williams; he's not on my board though because of some squirrel-ly behaviour where he retired for a month not to mention he has fumble-itis...

Re: 2017 NFL Combine - Saints Prospects

In the BP drill for the O-Line group, a couple of things jumped out...

Guard prospect Corey Levin from Tennessee-Chattanooga did better than expected with 26 reps, right there in the pack with the blue chip prospects...

USC Tackle Chad Wheeler, who had core strength questions, and coming from that program with those resources, O-line tradition had only 15 reps - now that takes him off my board...

Isaac Asiata led the group with 35 (also a great interview) definitely bumped his stock, possibly into the 3rd round...

Forrest Lamp, Western Kentucky, was one off the lead with 34 reps; he likely won't make it past the Pats, who released Sebastian Vollmer...

LSU's Ethan Pocic & Indiana's Dan Feeney each had a respectable 26 reps...

Less than 25 reps for an O-line prospect coming from a Div I school should raise a flag...

Levin, Pocic, and Feeney also ran good 40 yd times for their class...

Foster has been reported to be a bit of an off the field head case caught with a gun.

O.J. Howard is looking better?

Hadnt heard the rest of that
No excuses for Foster there

The sad thing is he will fall to the mid first round and a team like Baltimore/Bengals will do a reclemation job on him and he will end up an all pro.

I haven't been as high on Foster as most. But I am high on Cunningham, he is just a blue collar type with really good athletisism and smarts. I'll take that day in day out.

Did you actually watch any of his drills?

Rankins wasn't the best DT in 2015 cfb season. Neither was Thomas the best receiver but their combine performances put them over the top. Furthermore, if a RB can't bench press he's going to be missing games due to injury. His stock is going to be lower than Fournette and Cook's because of that. If they draft him it will be because Payton wanted him. Usually players have to show something in workouts to be drafted by the saints as evidenced by Robinson not getting drafted over Rankins.

[QUOTE=ChrisXVI;738507]Definitely doing our due diligence on edge rushers. Interviews with:

Tenn-Chattanooga DE Keionata Davis

Keionta Davis, DE, UT-Chattanooga
Height: 6-3. Weight: 274. Arm: 33.13. Hand: 9.
Projected 40 Time: 4.90.
Projected Round (2017): 4-6.
2/18/17: Over the past two seasons, Davis was one of the most consistent pass-rushers in college football, and that earned him an invitation to the Senior Bowl, where he had a decent week. Davis has versatile size to be an edge defender in a 4-3 or 3-4 defense.

Davis totaled 10.5 sacks with 44 tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss, seven passes batted and three forced fumbles in 2016. He produced even more pass rush as a junior with 13.5 sacks, 39 tackles, 17 for a loss, six passes broken up and a forced fumble. He also had four forced fumbles as a sophomore.

Ohio DE Tarell Basham

Tarell Basham, DE, Ohio
Height: 6-3. Weight: 259. Arm: 32.88. Hand: 10.38.
Projected 40 Time: 4.90.
Projected Round (2017): 4-6.
2/18/17: Every season, there are some small-school prospects who get exposure at the college all-star games, and Basham got that opportunity at this year's Senior Bowl. He had a solid week in Mobile and did well rushing the passer in the one-on-ones.

As a senior, Basham totaled 50 tackles with 16 tackles for a loss, 11.5 sacks and two passes broken up. He had some modest sack production as a junior (5.5), sophomore (4) and freshman (7.5). Basham ended his career with totals of 40 tackles for a loss, 28.5 sacks and six forced fumbles.

Missouri DE Charles Harris

Charles Harris, DE/OLB, Missouri
Height: 6-3. Weight: 260.
Projected 40 Time: 4.77.
Projected Round (2017): 1-2.
2/18/17: Harris totaled 61 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, nine sacks, two passes batted and two forced fumbles in 2016. To start the season, he turned in underwhelming performances against West Virginia and Eastern Michigan with a total of five tackles in those games. Harris exploded versus Georgia though, racking up three sacks and seven tackles.

8/13/16: Harris (6-3, 235) is a speedy edge rusher who broke out in 2015 with 56 tackles, 18.5 tackles for a loss, seven sacks and two forced fumbles. He was a backup as a redshirt freshman in 2014 and notched two sacks. Harris needs to add weight for the NFL.

What Harris does the best is get after the quarterback. He is a fast edge rusher with a fantastic first-step. He quickly gets penetration into the backfield and shows a nice ability to finish off plays. Harris is a fast edge rusher who can burn tackles with pure speed around the corner. Not only is his speed dangerous, but Harris shows some good moves with an excellent spin move back to the inside. He has some speed-to-power skills with the ability to fight offensive tackles. Harris also possesses some functional strength for the pass rush and shows quality read-and-react skills.

Aside from his run defense, Harris could use work on improving a few things. Running more hoop drills could help him to sink his hips better, as there have been instances when he looked a little stiff hipped. Harris has a good starting point for pass-rushing moves that is a lot more advanced than many early round pass-rushers who just rely on their natural athleticisms, but continuing to developed more moves and master his current ones is always a good idea. Harris should continue to refine and expand his moves arsenal. He also should work on his hand usage to continue to get better at as using his hands and feet at the same time.

For the NFL, I think Harris would be an excellent fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker. He has a good body type for that. He could remain a 4-3 defensive end, but he could have problems in run defense in that scheme.

Villanova DE Tanoh Kpassagnon

Tanoh Kpassagnon, DE, Villanova
Height: 6-6. Weight: 280. Arm: 34.75. Hand: 10.88.
Projected 40 Time: 4.72.
Projected Round (2017): 2-3.
2/18/17: Kpassagnon recorded 45 tackles with 21.5 for a loss, 11 sacks, one forced fumble and a pass batted in 2016. Sources from multiple teams said they see Kpassagnon being selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He had a quality week of practice at the Senior Bowl.

9/3/16: Kpassagnon has impressed NFL sources in their scouting of fall practices. In 2015, he totaled 33 tackles with 6.5 sacks, 9.5 tackles for a loss, two blocked kicks and a forced fumble. Evaluators believe that Kpassagnon is raw, but that the skill set is there with a lot of upside to develop. Sources say that Kpassagnon is a perfect fit as a five-technique defensive end in a 3-4 defense. Defensive ends with his measurements are in demand, and teams believe that a strong season could result in Kpassagnon being selected in the second or third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Like the flexibility in OL positions:
Ethan Pocic C/OG/OT LSU 6056 309 5.18 Sr #77 Sr

Like the measurables (idea) of a DE who should set the edge and rush, too:
Tanoh Kpassagnon, DE, Villanova
Height: 6-6. Weight: 280. Arm: 34.75. Hand: 10.88.
Projected 40 Time: 4.72.
Projected Round (2017): 2-3.

Takkarist McKinley to have shoulder surgery, says he'll miss 4-6 months

Jeff Legwold
ESPN Senior Writer
INDIANAPOLIS -- UCLA defensive end Takkarist McKinley, one of the most highly rated edge rushers in this year's NFL draft, said he will have surgery on a troublesome right shoulder injury Monday and his recovery time will be "four to six months."

McKinley said Saturday at the scouting combine that he will do all of the drills in Indianapolis, including the bench press Saturday as well as the on-field workout for the defensive linemen on Sunday. McKinley, a fast riser in the pre-draft evaluation who had 10 sacks last season, said he's played with the injury for almost two seasons, but that the extent of it was discovered in recent weeks.

"My agent asked if anything was wrong with me, and I said I had a shoulder that was sometimes bothering me," McKinley said. "I had an MRI and the doctor was pretty much amazed I had played with it. Me, I just told my trainers at UCLA, 'Just tape me up I'm ready to go.'

"Why get surgery before the combine? This is a dream come true to me. I'm here to knock it out."

McKinley was a projected first-round pick in ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr.'s mock draft last month and was rated as the top outside linebacker prospect according to ESPN's Todd McShay.

McKinley said he was told he had a torn labrum in the shoulder as well as a fracture in the shoulder "socket." He added he suffered the injury in the Bruins' 2015 game against Arizona State and has played with it since.

"One of my teammates, I was going for the tackle, hit me directly on the shoulder and ever since then I've never felt right," McKinley said. "I just played through it, I'm not the type to complain. Sometimes it would bother me .... This is really nothing to me. If it was up to me, I wouldn't even get the surgery. But as far as me being in the NFL, being healthy, it's best just to knock out this combine."

McKinley had 18 tackles for loss this past season with 61 tackles overall. He weighed in at 250 pounds at the combine, and many teams see him as a fit as a defensive end in a 4-3 defense or outside linebacker in a 3-4 look.

A four- to six-month recovery period would mean McKinley will miss a team's offseason program and possibly training camp if it takes a full six months before he is cleared to play. But McKinley said he expects no long-term effects and that "once I get this done and get healthy, I'll be good to go."
